Assistant Professor of Computer Science

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science invites applications for a tenure-track position in Computer Science at the rank of Assistant Professor. Applicants should be broadly trained in computer science and have a passion for teaching in a liberal arts setting. All areas of specialization will be considered.  The successful applicant should be highly engaged and innovative in the classroom, willing to mentor senior research students, and committed to working closely with students both in and outside of class. Applicants are expected to maintain an active research program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A Ph.D. in Computer Science is required, with teaching experience beyond typical TA responsibilities preferred. Candidates must have strong communication skills, with a demonstrable ability to articulate complex topics effectively to undergraduate students at all levels. Candidates should also demonstrate an interest and ability to engage undergraduate students in research. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The teaching load is three courses per semester. The successful candidate should be able to teach any of the courses in the introductory sequence as well as a variety of upper-division courses based on the candidate's expertise.  Courses taught may include offerings for the University’s requirements in General Education, including First Year Seminars and Junior Seminars. All majors in the College of Arts and Sciences complete a year-long Senior Research Project; therefore, engaging in active research that involves undergraduate students and advising and mentoring senior research students is expected. We are also interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from underrepresented groups. THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers undergraduate degrees in Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Computer Information Systems (https://www.stetson.edu/other/academics/programs.php#undergrad).  The Department integrates software engineering into a rigorous, research-oriented undergraduate program. This combination prepares students for either graduate study in Computer Science or a career in the software development industry. We emphasize small classes and investigative research in and out of the classroom.

THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES:

Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (http://www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and
most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools. With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts.
