Job Description

Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Director, this position is responsible for the coordination and management of the Outdoor Adventures Program within the Department of Campus Recreation. Primary functions include the oversight of trip logistics and programming on land and water, Warehouse operations, gear and equipment rentals, Bike HUB operation and trainings, and development of internal and external collaborations.

Program Coordination 30%

  • Plan, develop and manage operations, scheduling, and logistics for field-based and collaborative programs.
  • Oversee warehouse operations, equipment, and inventory, coordinate and manage maintenance schedules and equipment replacement plans.
  • Oversee basecamp operations, gear rental program and resource service center, including bike education and maintenance.
  • Responsible for financial oversight, assisting with the projection, reporting and management of the program budget, including purchasing inventory items and equipment, and reconciling as needed.

Program Management 30%

  • In collaboration, coordinate instructional programming fostering environmental awareness, respect, and sustainable practices, and assist with facilitating skill development for both single and multi-day field-based programs on land and water.
  • Develop and administer a comprehensive risk management plan to emphasize safety and preparedness for staff and participants.
  • Work in collaboration to revise and maintain industry best practices and compliance with university policies and procedures within the scope of approved programs.

Program Supervision 20%

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate qualified federal work study students, student wage employees and non-student employees as needed to support outdoor offerings and experiences.
  • Coordinate and lead rigging briefing/de-briefing for field-based programming.
  • Prepare and maintain program assessments and data, roster management, evaluations, academic success tracking, and year-end accomplishments.
  • Track, audit, and manage all staff certifications, for both student workers and non-student workers.
  • Serve as a Manager-on-Duty to provide support to trip leaders in emergency/non-emergency situations.

Program Collaboration 15%

  • Foster partnerships with outside departments and agencies to enhance program quality and opportunities for staff and participants.
  • Serve as a liaison for Outdoor Adventures social media plans and web page management and maintenance, working collaboratively with staff to ensure accuracy of information and relevant updates.
  • Contribute to the overall marketing and promotional efforts of the Outdoor Adventures program.
  • Create and maintain a supportive and culturally rich, diverse, and inclusive environment for staff and participants.

Other 5%

  • Act as a representative and liaison for Campus Recreation and other university departments.
  • Participate as a representative of Campus Recreation at university programs and events, including but not limited to: Family Weekend, Homecoming, Orientation, Expos, Welcome Week and New Employee Orientations.
  • Provide accurate and timely communications to supervisor and Campus Recreation Leadership.
  • This position may require working mornings, evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned to support division and departmental vision, objectives and goals.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Outdoor Leadership, Leisure Studies, Parks & Recreation Management, or related field AND three years administrative/coordinator program experience; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Professional Membership - NIRSA, AORE and/or AEE.
  • Leave No Trace Master Educator.
  • Outdoor Leadership Instructor Certification (NOLS, WEA, Outward Bound).
  • American Red Cross Instructor Certification, CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer or obtain within 60 days.
  • Swift-water Rescue Certification.
  • River Guide Certifications or License.
  • Challenge Course Facilitator.
  • Various experience leading groups in outdoor settings.
  • Experience in hiring, supervising, and evaluating student staff.
  • Experience with these software solutions: InnoSoft Fusion, Campus Labs, and Event Management System (EMS).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Demonstrated successful skills in leadership, organization, management and marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of working with people from a variety of backgrounds and demonstrated sensitivity to multicultural issues.
  • Demonstrated successful skills with developing, executing and evaluating Outdoor programs, including land and water.
  • Ability to analyze problems, exercising sound judgments leading to fair and well thought out decisions.
  • Ability to schedule, organize and facilitate Outdoor programs.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

The budgeted salary amount is $36,018 - $45,023.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.


FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
