The Department of Italian Studies at Smith College invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in the area of Early Modern Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022.

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Italian Studies or a related area in the humanities, and have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching both culture and language. Fluency in spoken and written Italian at the highest level of proficiency is essential. Knowledge of other languages is desirable, as we seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our emphasis on transnational studies. The successful candidate will be an active interdisciplinary scholar whose research and teaching combine expertise in both Italian Medieval/Renaissance Studies and Global Early Modern Studies.

Possible areas of research specialization include but are not limited to: Book and Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Diaspora and Migration Studies, Gender Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, Mediterranean Studies, Art and Visual Studies.

While the successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of Italian Studies, they will also teach and be creatively engaged in the department’s transnational approach and its developing collaboration with Smith’s Department of German Studies. In particular, we welcome applications from scholars whose work expands beyond the canonical study of Early Modern culture and brings a variety of transversal, interdisciplinary and ethically-informed perspectives to the field.

Demonstrated familiarity with both online and in-person pedagogical practices is required. Successful candidates should be prepared to engage with diverse students across the liberal arts and actively attract them to the study of humanities.
