Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst invites applications for one (or potentially more) senior faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the broad area of Biomedical Engineering. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2022.

Founded in 2017, the Department of Biomedical Engineering (https://bme.umass.edu) currently has 11 full-time faculty members, 18 Ph.D. students, and 310 undergraduate students. Research expenditures in the 2020-2021 fiscal year exceeded $1.9M. The Department has outstanding research programs in the areas of Biomechanics, Biomaterials, and Bioinstrumentation. The department includes broad opportunities for collaboration within and outside of the department.

Requirements

The candidates are expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses; supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; contribute significantly to the advancement of basic science and engineering, as evidenced by scholarly publications; develop a nationally recognized program of sponsored research; and have a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or related fields. The successful candidates should possess academic credentials of the highest quality and have a strong record of teaching, research, extramural funding, service, and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additional Information

The Department of Biomedical Engineering represents the core of biomedical engineering research and teaching at UMass, Amherst and will leverage synergies with other departments in the College as well as with the new Institute of Applied Life Sciences (IALS: https://www.umass.edu/ials/), which was established in 2014 with an investment of more than $150 million from the Massachusetts Life Science Center and the University. IALS manages more than 30 core equipment facilities to enable its translational mission (https://www.umass.edu/ials/core-facilities). There are also avenues for collaboration with the UMass Chan Medical School (UMCMS) located in Worcester, MA, and Baystate Health in Springfield, MA. The successful candidates may choose to establish the research lab on the UMCMS campus.

  • A cover letter, addressed to Dr. Yu Chen, chair of the search committee, clearly indicating how their expertise and vision will help shape the BME department
  • A four-page (maximum) NIH-style biosketch indicating current position and title, education and training, personal statement, positions and honors, contributions to science (including a link to the full list of peer-reviewed publications), and any prior research support
  • A five-page (maximum) research statement outlining your research interests, accomplishments, and future goals; describing how your expertise could potentially integrate with current department research activities, and where relevant, university research activities; and including plans for securing extramural funding
  • A two-page (maximum) teaching statement describing your teaching philosophy, relevant experience, and what undergraduate and graduate courses you might offer or develop
  • A two-page (maximum) statement about equity, diversity and inclusion (DEI) as they relate to the faculty role in teaching, research and/or service. Specifically, the search committee is looking for indicators of commitment to DEI and what resources would be required to successfully implement teaching and research programs incorporating DEI.
  • Names and contact information for at least three professional references
