Job Description:

The Duke Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is currently recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate to join our research team focused on Behavioral Science and the Law. The candidate will work under the supervision of senior faculty members: Drs. Jeffrey Swanson, Allison Robertson, Michele Easter and Marvin Swartz. The position will primarily be focused on studies related to the areas of substance use disorders, mental health disorders, criminal justice and violence. Several specific projects focus on the effectiveness of programs to avoid or reduce incarceration of individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders. Several foundation-funded projects are available and include both qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The Ideal candidate will have:

  • A Ph.D or equivalent research-focused degree in a social or behavioral science discipline, public health, epidemiology, health services research or health policy, or a related discipline
  • Strong quantitative research methods and statistical analysis skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Strong programming and analytic skills (SAS, R, SPSS, STATA or other statistical packages).
  • Knowledge or interest in public health and policy-focused research on addiction and/or mental health disorders, especially at the intersection with criminal justice.
  • Ability to develop and implement new statistical methodologies.
  • Interest in also assisting with recruitment and data collection of ongoing trials and project management.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with faculty investigators to become familiar with substantive background and research methods applicable to ongoing studies.
  • Statistical analysis of large, complex datasets; database construction and management.
  • Collaborate on multiple research projects at a time.
  • Preparation of independent research manuscripts for publication.
  • Assist with data queries for research grant proposals.
  • Work effectively with other members of the research team.

Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B. Duke, created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.Duke Campus
