Nature of Work:

This full-time, University Staff (unclassified) Enterprise Telephony and VoIP Architect IT Professional is a multi-faceted position responsible for enterprise VoIP telephony architecture, infrastructure engineering, project management, and internal tier III operational support. This position will participate in performing daily operational support duties as needed and identified as the role evolves and matures within the Office of Information Technology (OIT).

The Enterprise Telephony and VoIP Architect must learn the university’s business strategy and its objectives, envision an effective and efficient information technology architecture to support that business strategy and meet those inherent objectives, and develop detailed plans to make that strategy a reality. While supporting the current Cisco VoIP platform. Establish and maintain ACD call centers across 2 campuses and numerus UCHealth Clinics.

The successful candidate must be able to work well within the university’s two campuses and multiple off-site locales, each with potentially competing priorities. Additionally, the individual will foster collaborative and positive teamwork between all OIT departments, focusing particularly on those departments upon which the telephony services are dependent.

The Enterprise Telephony and VoIP Architect works during normal business hours but will be required to perform out of hours work on occasion in support of regular maintenance and in response to service incidents.

Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed at an advanced or expert level.

Principal Professionals are either work leads over others or are considered a subject matter expert in a particular area.                                         

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Telephony Enterprise Architecture – this position performs the duties of an enterprise telephony architect. Duties may include designing, building, and commissioning a reliable, available, and maintainable Cisco VoIP infrastructure. Understand, design, and support a hybrid telephony system including but not limited to Microsoft Teams, Cisco VoIP, and other emerging technologies.
  • Telephony Infrastructure Engineering – this position serves as a senior authority for engineering and implementation of all telephony services at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus. The position will be required to work closely with outside vendors and internal support teams such as desktop support, enterprise services, network security, and core networking, to execute their duties and ensure that telephony services have high reliability, availability, and scalability for the university community. University telephony services include Cisco Call Control, Cisco voice gateways, Cisco networking, Cisco CUC Voicemail, SPOK 911 System, Cisco CUPS, Cisco Emergency Responder, Microsoft Teams Voice, and Integrated Corning One (CDAS, CBRS). The position understands the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), how to integrate Cisco services with the PSTN, and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Trunking.
  • The Enterprise Telephony Architect will be required to determine and document project requirements and provide creative solutions that meet the project’s needs. The Enterprise Telephony Architect will provide project management for both large and small telephony projects from inception to closure. An example of a large project might be the deployment of a new telephony service offering, such as a transition to a cloud offering. An example of a small project might be the extension of current service offerings into a new or existing space, new building, renovation, or offsite clinic as examples.
  • Operational Support Resource – The Enterprise Telephony Architect provides services such as data networking and voice provisioning, Moves/Adds/Changes, business requirements gathering, mentoring to team members, development of training content for new and existing services, diagnosis and resolution of telephony service issues, performance of preventive maintenance, and physical deployment of equipment as needed.
  • The Enterprise Telephony Architect uses independent decision making to provide emergency problem resolution and to minimize the negative impact of the emergency. This position provides system diagnostics for complex problems and resolves issues as they occur, once new telephony services are released into production.
  • The successful applicant will be able to create, maintain, and document ACD systems using Cisco UCCX ACD services and be aware of alternatives in the market.
Administrative Duties

This position will be responsible for systems documentation, defining and managing preventative maintenance checks and services, cable plant records, and consulting with management on improvement opportunities. The Enterprise Telephony and VoIP Architect follows all change advisory board processes prior to implementing changes to the telephony baseline. The position will interact with and support vendors that provide services to the university. The successful applicant must work within established work tracking systems, such as Cherwell and PCR360, to log and document work progress and completion

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $80,000 to $112,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a closely related field.
  • SUBSTITUTION: A combination of work experience in the computer science/technology field along with an unrelated bachelor’s degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the computer science bachelor’s degree.
  • Cisco Certification – CCNA/Voice or (4) years’ experience engineering and direct support of Cisco VoIP services including CUCM, CUC, UCCX, and CUPS may be substituted for the certification.
  • (2) years engineering and direct support of Cisco VoIP services including CUCM, CUC, UCCX, and CUPS
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master of Science degree in computer science or a closely related field.
  • Cisco certifications – CCNP/Voice, CCIE with (8+) years engineering and direct support of Cisco VoIP services including CUCM, CUC, UCCX, and CUPS.
  • Microsoft Teams Certifications – Teams Support Engineer Associate, Teams Administrator Associate
  • 4 years of experience with large Cisco VoIP deployments, network switching, and network routing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess a deep understanding of Cisco voice and enterprise data networking.
  • Have strong project management skills.
  • Ability to work closely with other IT staff.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, as needed.
  • Operational knowledge of NEC telephone systems.
  • Willingness to learn new systems and processes.
  • Willingness to accept challenging responsibilities.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with personnel at all levels within the university, as well as outside vendors/contacts.

  • Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, diverse, and growth-oriented environment.

  • Strong work ethic and commitment to going “above and beyond” for customers.
  • Excellent working knowledge with standard LAN/WAN/VoIP concepts and procedures particularly QoS and VLAN Experience with Cisco Unified Communications.
Conditions of Employment:

This position may require some occasional weekend and evening assignments as well as occasional availability during off-hours for participation in both scheduled and unscheduled activities.

This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule of locally remote work and on-site work. The work schedule will be based around core working hours in Colorado Mountain Time.
