Nature of Work

The AV Support Professional is a member of the Technology Support Services (TSS) division within the Office of Information Technology (OIT) for the University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses. The AV Support Professional’s responsibilities include providing depth of knowledge and higher level AV integration, troubleshooting and support services for a wide range of facilities campus wide. Additionally, the AV Support Professional will be responsible for the ongoing consultation and support of education and administrative applications of videoconferencing resources and electronic media via IP networks, teleconferencing/web-conferencing via landlines, service support for computers, data communications, video and audio-visual systems and equipment used for educational and administrative purposes and the CU Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses.

This position exists to assist and advise faculty, staff and students on the utilization of the various electronic media available in the CU Denver educational buildings and in other academic, research and/or clinical spaces on the campuses. The position is primarily responsible for providing support for educational and administrative audio visual and video equipment in the classrooms, including podium computers, assisting faculty, staff and students in delivering educational or other administrative content in classroom spaces. The position also advises management concerning the selection of equipment for particular applications when appropriate, and assists with the configuration, installation and ongoing operation and support for all audio/video and other classroom equipment. The position is also responsible for the management of AV control systems in assigned spaces.

Jobs in this career family develop, maintain, and support computer systems, software and networks.  Functions include enterprise operations, distributed computing, academic computing, research computing, computer hardware and software management, computer networking, telecommunications, systems development, database administration, server administration, website management, programming, desktop support, and help desk operations.

This position requires some occasional weekend and evening assignments as well as availability during off-hours for participation in both scheduled and unscheduled activities.

Professionals at the intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the intermediate level, duties may be more limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides proactive and reactive audio/visual and other classroom technology support for multipurpose classrooms, multipurpose laboratories, small group learning rooms, small and large classrooms and auditoriums, conference rooms as well as equipment checkout facilities. This includes operation, configuration, networking, troubleshooting, scheduling, inventorying, usage monitoring, and repair as needed.
  • Monitors and maintains room functionality and reports malfunctions and other issues including lighting, seating/furniture, heating, cooling, and general repairs and maintenance to the appropriate department (facilities, etc.). 
  • Recommends and communicates hardware, tool and equipment/supply procurement needs for assigned spaces.
  • Responds to calls from the classroom support help desk for assistance with installed teaching technologies including assisting with touch panels, setting and adjusting room displays to adequately display user’s content, installing additional peripherals as needed, and otherwise working to meet the customer’s needs.
  • Prepares classrooms for distance learning sessions, or to otherwise meet the needs and requirements for campus events, including the operation of in-room cameras, microphones, and distance education equipment to ensure quality transmissions of educational content for both students and faculty in the room as well as at the distant sites.
  • Assists instructors and other constituents with computers and classroom technologies such as podium computers, videoconferencing equipment, document cameras, in-room microphones and cameras, and other technologies. Assess the type of technology that best suits the needs of the customer and recommends the solution that best fits the needs.
  • Develops and otherwise contributes to the creation of end-user system documentation.
  • Responsible responding to incidents or requests submitted via a department ticket system (Cherwell) and for owning the escalation processes to ensure appropriate escalation of tickets requiring tiered intervention within the division.
  • Troubleshoots network connection issues, video bridge connection issues, or other issues that prevent proper classroom technology functionality, and collaborates with the appropriate team to resolve problems outside of the Classroom Support arena.
  • Responsible for maintaining control room and all contained components in assigned spaces on campus. This includes the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair as needed for the AV control systems within these spaces and escalation of issues to the appropriate resources within the department as needed.
  • Completes set-ups for recorded classes or events, working with the video bridge operators to verify proper audio levels and correct camera angles, and ensures the best quality of broadcast for recording possible.
  • Occasionally repairs, certifies, calibrates, fabricates, modifies and installs a variety of equipment such as television monitors, projectors, microphones, and other classroom technology equipment. Responsible for coordination and scheduling the repair and/or installation as well as picking up and processing disposal as necessary for replaced pieces.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of room equipment and configurations, keeps co-workers and supervisor updated on relevant system configuration changes in assigned spaces.
  • Assist with assigned integration projects of audio visual technologies for the TSS division, including participation in commissioning, and training on renovated systems for users of the campus classrooms, conference rooms, videoconference rooms and other technology spaces. Ensure final room functionality including identifying and providing accessories as needed, appropriate asset management and disposal of old equipment, and following up with customers to ensure ongoing satisfaction and that technology remains function, relevant and supportable.
  • Attends meetings and/or walk-throughs of AV integration in department managed spaces as assigned for relevant projects.
  • Develops and maintains excellent working relationships with audiovisual users on the campus, faculty, staff and students alike.
Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $51,794 to $63,000 and is commensurate with skills and experience. This position is eligible for overtime compensation

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum two years of experience setting up, supporting and/or installing/integrating audio visual systems in both large and small venues
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution or equivalent number of years of directly related experience in the field of AV engineering, support, design, integration, and consulting.  SUBSTITUTION: Four (4) years of experience may substitute for the required bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis, but not for the additional specific required experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years’ experience working in higher education
  • One or more years of progressive experience in classroom technology management or support
  • Current InfoComm Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) or CTS-I, or additional industry related certification
  • Current CompTIA A+ or other similar basic hardware certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be self-motivated, self- managed, and able to adjust priorities while maintaining productivity and responding to support requests
  • Proven work experience and knowledge in supporting projection and display, sound and speech reinforcement, audio and video conferencing, analog and digital signal processing, distribution and control systems for audio visual and other classroom equipment technologies. Hands on experience with projectors, control panels, full AV systems and ability to analyze problems in a natural progression
  • General knowledge of information technology services, hardware, infrastructure and system design
  • Proficiency in MS Office 2007 or later, including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Solid relevant technical background with an ability to give instructions to a non-technical audience
  • Customer-service oriented with a can-do, problem-solving attitude
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, comfortable with face-to-face customer service
  • Comfortable working independently with both minimal and specific direction as well as working as part of a team
Conditions of Employment:

  • This position may require some occasional weekend and evening assignments as well as occasional availability during off-hours for participation in both scheduled and unscheduled activities.
