Job Description

The Graduate Assistant for Student Involvement (CAB) will primarily be responsible for the enhancement, advising, mentoring and leadership development of the Campus Activities Board students as they work to ensure maximum involvement and engagement from the student bodyleading to student academic and personal success, while fostering a lifelong affinity to the university. Campus Activities Board is a student-run programming board that is committed to maintaining Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s traditions and instilling university pride in events such as Week of Welcome, Spirit Week/Fall Fest, Heritage Month Events, and more. The Graduate Assistant also works to ensure maximum involvement and engagement from the student body. This position requires an individual who is organized, energetic, creative, and leadership-oriented. The graduate assistant will lead the promotion of events or activities using social media platforms or other media and communications through developing and co-advising the social media street team for Student Involvement. This assistantship is part-time minimum of 20 hours per week, marketing experience is desired but not required.

Responsibilities:

This Graduate Assistant should gain experience in advising, programming, student organizations, campus policies, non-traditional students and working with faculty and staff advisors.

  • Coordinates and plans A&M-SA sponsored events and/or activities as related to Student Involvement. Create, enhance, and sustain collaborative partnership with key campus organizations and departments to create successful co-curricular involvement and programming opportunities for students.

  • Assists in the planning, organizing, implementing and participating in University activities to include Fall Fest, Heritage Month, Senior Week/Day, Finals Extravaganza, First 50 Days, Weeks of Welcome and more.

  • Co-advise, mentor, and provide leadership development to A&M-SA Campus Activities Board.
    o Advise students on event planning and management, contract negotiation, and assessment of activities
    o Negotiate contracts, work with university, local, and state-wide vendors, and maintain the Campus Activities Board budget
    o Create, develop and implement late night & weekend programming

  • Assist with the creation, development, and implementation of Student Involvement Street Team.
    o Assist in the Social Media outreach provided by the department
    o Create and distribute a weekly event Email Newsletter

  • Provide support to the office assistants in the daily operations of the office, such as:
    o Staffing the front desk, answering phones, fielding questions on programs from students, and providing general customer service

  • Volunteer and participate with the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA)

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director and Director of Student Involvement.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Must be organized, highly motivated, accountable, and responsible

  • Ability to work with and relate well to a wide variety of people

  • A desire to work with college students

  • Be able to learn standardized software systems

  • Availability to work some nights and weekends when needed in order to ensure a quality student experience is an expectation for the position.

  • Ability to work in a team-oriented and collaborative environment.

  • Must possess strong organizational, time-management skills, and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Must possess strong computer competence, including but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, and social media and marketing mediums.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working as a student leader with program planning background (including experiences as an undergraduate and/or graduate student)

  • Marketing experience but not limited to creating a marketing plan, website design, social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, etc.)

  • Experience working with event planning and management, contract negotiation, and assessment of activities.

Expected Attendance:

  • Must be available for Bi-Weekly General Body meetings Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m.

  • Must be available for weekly Executive Board meetings Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • NACA National Conference: Feb. 12-16, 2022

  • Expected to attend various events throughout the year for Student Involvement, as deemed necessary by the Assistant Director of Student Involvement.

  • Expected to attend all respective retreats and SSE divisional meetings.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

  • Be able to identify and implement strategies for enhancing a campus community through student engagement and involvement.

  • Learn and develop advising strategies and skills in order to effectively build strong advising relationships with student leaders.

  • Become experienced in training, developing, and assessing student leaders.

  • Increase proficiency in planning, implementing, and assessing campus-wide events focused on meeting the needs of a diverse student population.

  • Obtain an understanding of skills and educate student leaders on the skills needed to work with and engage a diverse student population.

  • Expand knowledge and educate student leaders on how to budget, market and negotiate contracts for campus wide events.

  • Obtain experience working in a fast-paced environment as a team with professional staff and student employees.
