Job Description

The Deputy Athletics Director - under direction of the Director of Athletics - is responsible for overseeing a variety of administrative unit and functions including: athletics compliance and eligibility - admissions through graduation, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, student-athlete advisory council initiatives, and manage other appropriate department and campus relationships. Provide oversight of Student –Athlete Performance Team – involving a cross-representation of campus and athletics partners to ensure quality student-athlete experience. Implements programs and services which help guide and assist student-athletes in their academic endeavors. Administrator for Responsible Lions program – dedicated to mental health and wellness initiatives that affect students. Serves as a department’s primary liaison to University Counseling Center, Title IX office, University Police Department, Dean of Students office, and Student Rights and Responsibilities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Primary manager for Intercollegiate Athletics Strategic Plan, Policies and Procedures Manual, and NCAA Division I Five-Year Transition Plan
  • Manage integration of NCAA Division I appropriate protocols and structure focused on student-services
  • Oversight for a variety of administrative units and functions, including – but not limited to: athletics compliance and eligibility, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, student-athlete advisory council initiatives, and manage other appropriate department and campus relationships
  • Provide oversight of Student –Athlete Performance Team – involving a cross-representation of campus and athletics partners to ensure quality student-athlete experience
  • Primary athletics liaison with University Title IX office, University Police Department, University Counseling Center, Dean of Students office, and Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Foster high level of collaboration between athletics compliance, eligibility, and Thrower Student-Athlete Success Center
  • Oversee and work directly with Director of Athletics on all functional and programming aspects of the Lion Leadership Academy – a key initiative to prepare students for life after their degree.
  • In conjunction with the associate athletic director for compliance services, assists head coaches with admissions procedures, interfacing with the Admissions Office and faculty committees, as required.
  • Serves as acting senior athletics administrator in the absence of the Director of Athletics.
  • Engages with comprehensive institutional recruitment initiatives by familiarizing prospective student athletes with the various academic programs and support services available at the University.
  • Assists in developing short and long-range plans for implementation of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Supervises particular aspects of sports administration, as may be deemed necessary by Director of Athletics.
  • Administrator over Responsible Lions program – dedicated to mental health and wellness initiatives that affect students.
  • Serves on Department, University, Conference and NCAA Committees as assigned. Serves as ex-officio member of the University Athletic Council.
  • Represent – or appoint - the university Conference Governance & NCAA Liaison.
  • Serves on Athletics Capital Improvements Team – including Director of Athletics at appropriate construction, finance, logistical, and operational meetings tied to Athletics capital improvements
  • Serves on Athletics Master Plan team
  • Other duties as designated by Director of Athletics

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Four years of experience in NCAA Division I - athletic administration. NCAA Division I experience required. General knowledge of and experience with NCAA rules. Supervisory experience. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to: Take initiative, demonstrate high level of trust, multitask and work cooperatively with others.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree. Five years of experience in NCAA Division I.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Associate Athletics Director for Compliance, Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, Senior Director of Sports Performance, possible graduate assistants and student workers.
