SEARCH FOR THE

VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICER

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA

THE SEARCH

University of Virginia (UVA) welcomes applications and nominations for the position of Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and innovative leader in the field to play a critical role in serving one of the nation’s leading public institutions.

In 1819, Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia and inaugurated a bold experiment – a public university designed to advance human knowledge, educate leaders, and cultivate an informed citizenry. More than two centuries later, this vision is thriving. Across Grounds – and throughout the world – UVA students, faculty, staff, and alumni challenge convention, break barriers, and pursue the greater good. The University has a strong arts and sciences faculty, a broad range of professional schools, and a strong academic medical center. From its unique student experience, focused on academic rigor, honor, student self-governance, and public service, the University has constructed an unusually strong culture, academically and personally, that has engendered deep loyalty and has enabled it to build the financial resources that are essential for a great university. With its strong financial position, including almost $15 billion in endowments and investments; inspirational leadership; and a renewed commitment to inclusive excellence; UVA offers an envious array of opportunities and possibilities. One of the largest employers in central Virginia, the University employs nearly 30,000 people, including approximately 16,000 faculty and staff, and approximately 12,000 UVA Health employees.

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Jennifer “J.J.” Davis, the Vice President and CHRO serves as the lead HR executive at UVA, championing a culture that empowers the University’s human capital and employee engagement that advances UVA’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Importantly, the CHRO serves as a member of the University’s senior leadership team as a trusted partner, a subject matter expert and a strategic, integrated resource that delivers consistent service and upholds shared principles across the enterprise. The CHRO will work closely with the President on advancing UVA’s strategic priorities; with the Executive Vice President and Provost in advancing the policies and strategies essential to the recruitment and retention of an excellent faculty in the Academic Division; and with the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs on the recruitment, hiring, and retention of healthcare professionals across UVA Health.

Since 2016, the University of Virginia has invested more than $60 million in a strategic transformation of human resources, creating a customer-focused enterprise-wide service delivery model with centralized HR functions and units under the umbrella of the office of the Vice President and CHRO. UVA/HR offers streamlined processes and consistent service across the academy, medical center, and physician clinical practice plan. This position represents a distinctive opportunity for a creative and engaged leader with expertise in academic and health system human resources to advance important institutional change at a premier public university.
