DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Lead Custodian assists in the supervision and completion of general custodial functions for all campus classrooms, buildings, and other facilities. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. The Lead Custodian oversees and directs the work of others to accomplish specific projects. This job class is responsible for ensuring all assigned custodial projects are completed satisfactorily, performing custodial maintenance duties requiring advanced skill and knowledge, and providing guidance to other custodial staff as needed to complete assignments properly. This job class requires a thorough knowledge of District policies and proper procedures related to custodial maintenance.

CLASSIFICATION: Range 29 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 5:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday, and 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. on Friday.

SUPERVISOR: Custodial Services Supervisor or designee

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability
Essential Functions:
• Participates in and provides guidance for other custodial staff in general custodial functions at all District facilities.
• Acts as lead person for custodial crew as assigned, providing direction and supervision of tasks.
• Assists in moving or rearranging chairs, tables, desks, furniture, and other equipment.
• Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines, scrubbers, and other equipment as needed.
• Assists in monitoring custodial supply inventories, preparing supply orders, receiving supply orders, and delivering supplies to custodial staff at all District facilities as needed.
• Conducts on-going inspections of all District facilities to ensure established custodial care standards are met consistently.
• Assists in maintaining the overtime rotation list and list of substitute custodians; coordinates substitute custodial needs.
• Substitutes for the Custodial Services Supervisor during absences as assigned.
• Assists in the setup, tear down, and cleaning for campus activities.
• Communicates maintenance issues to supervisors and peers timely and effectively.
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with custodial staff and the college community.
• Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.

Knowledge of:
• Modern cleaning methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
• The safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in custodial work.
• Health and safety regulations pertaining to custodial work, equipment, and chemicals used in an educational environment.
• Proper care and maintenance of custodial equipment and tools.
• Verbal and written communication skills.
• Interpersonal communication skills demonstrating tact, patience, and courtesy.

Ability to:
• Effectively and safely use custodial equipment in performing assigned work.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
• Work effectively with people from diverse age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious, ability, sexual orientation, and other populations.

Experience/Education
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of experience in general custodial work.
• A valid and appropriate California Driver's license, Class "C" restricted with a driving record acceptable to the District's insurance carrier.
