The Department of Writing, Literature & Publishing at Emerson College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Asian Diasporic literatures. The appointment begins August 18, 2022. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to traditional research, teaching, and service.

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the college's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities.

The Department of Writing, Literature, and Publishing is a vibrant and engaged community of scholars, writers, publishers, and designers with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 550 undergraduate majors, and 250 graduate students in the Creative Writing MFA program and Publishing MA program.

Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Its main campus is located in the center of the dynamic multicultural city of Boston, in close proximity to major publishing houses, arts institutions, and research centers. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Emerson College enrolls over 5,100 graduate and undergraduate students from more than 58 countries and all 50 states.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Asian Diasporic and/or Asian American literatures, or a related field, experience teaching literature at the college level, and evidence of scholarly activity. Desired secondary areas of interest include: critical race theory, contemporary literature taught in translation, global and transnational studies, gender and sexuality studies, queer of color critique, settler colonial studies, popular genre literatures and forms such as children's or young adult literature and graphic narratives, or Asian languages and literatures. A strong commitment to undergraduate education in a residential college environment is essential.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of undergraduate courses on the traditions, histories, and theories of Asian Diasporic literatures. The candidate may also teach literary foundations and courses fulfilling a college-wide literature requirement, which could include a first-year seminar. Graduate literature courses for the residential MFA program, the online MFA program, and students in the MA in Publishing and Writing program may be part of the teaching duties. In addition to teaching five courses a year, all faculty members advise and mentor students and participate in the college's system of shared governance.
