Reporting Responsibilities: The Director of Counseling Services reports to the Assistant Dean/Director of Campus Health and Wellness

Job Summary:
The Director of Counseling Services serves a critical role as part of the SMCX team. The counselor provides skilled services to meet the personal and mental health needs of Spartanburg Methodist College students. The counselor ensures that consistently high-level services and programs are designed for the benefit of SMC students.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for delivery of counseling services.
  • Evaluate the needs of client students and determine the best course of intervention or support.
  • Provide on-campus counseling services along with professional off-campus referrals on an as needed basis.
  • Provide confidential reporting regarding the Clery Act and Title IX.
  • Maintain accurate and appropriately confidential records of counseling.
  • Provide guidance, support and consultation to other staff and faculty involved in counseling and advising outside of SMC Counseling Services. (outreach for faculty, staff, and students.)
  • Continue professional development through study, workshops, professional memberships, and associations.
  • Prepare reports, evaluations, recommendations, and other assignments as requested.
  • Provide support to SMCX programs including but not limited to Orientation, Enrollment Days and Open Houses.
  • Assist Student Development with additional responsibilities on an as needed basis.
  • Planning for the year ahead with SMCX team and other campus constituents (representing clients concerns in these areas for planning and programming.) Here are a few areas that would be critical to work with. As well as connecting with other areas not represented in the example below.
    • Campus Safety (Emergency Management Manual, etc.,)
    • Community Life: Residence Life and Student Conduct (Student Handbook Updates, Student staff training, etc.,)
    • Accessibility Resources (Assisting Accessibility Resources with students with mental health issues, needing accommodation(s), etc.,)
    • Campus Health and Wellness
    • Human Resources (see faculty/staff manual and tips below)
  • Continue client support during the summer
  • Manage updates/contract/relationship with National Center for Performance Health (NCPH)
  • Manage student handbook/emergency manual/counseling manual reviews & updates
  • Manage titanium updates & training for staff
  • Preparing a Faculty/Staff Manual with tips on how to handle student situations.
    • Dealing with students in crisis.
    • Responding to students with mental health needs.
    • Instruction on how to handle after-hours concerns.
  • Attending faculty workshop/staff town hall to share what services are available
  • Recording sessions in studio on campus for posting on intranet to assist Student/Faculty/Staff with concerns around counseling areas. (stigma, confidentiality, etc.)
  • Programming Model for Counseling for the academic year
  • Create and maintain manual for counseling intern
  • Propose and implement an onboarding process for the counseling intern position.
  • Organize, plan, facilitate and evaluate annual SMC counseling/mental health education conference for local organizations and institutions to participate in
  • Assist with emergency phone/virtual counseling sessions after hours, only as needed for emergency situations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Professional knowledge of counseling theories and processes.
  • Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to the concerns, routine or critical, of college students.
  • Skill in all aspects of the counseling relationship.
  • Skill making presentations in group settings.


Working Conditions:
The duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Required Physical Abilities:

  • Ability to move around the campus.
  • Manual and physical dexterity and visual acuity are needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
  • Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer display screen, in hand­ written form, and printed on paper.
  • Adequate hearing and verbal abilities to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.


Education & Experience:

  • Education: Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field along with appropriate certifications.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years of full-time experience (excluding internships) in professional counseling is required.
  • Ability to be licensed as a professional counselor in South Carolina.
  • Optional: 18+ graduate hours in psychology required to qualify for instructor responsibilities.

FLSA:       Exempt (12-month position)
