Description of Work:

The Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) (https://engineering.unl.edu/durhamschool) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor, and a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor in the area of Construction Management and Engineering beginning in Fall 2022. The Durham School is co-located in two cities, Lincoln and Omaha, which are approximately 50 miles apart. With approximately 30 faculty, 500 undergraduate students, and 100 graduate students, the Durham School is the only endowed academic unit ($30 million) in the UNL College of Engineering and has strong ties with several world-class construction firms, including Black & Veatch, Hensel Phelps, JE Dunn, Kiewit, McCarthy, Turner, Weitz, Whiting-Turner and many others. Currently the UNL College of Engineering is building a new $115 million teaching facility named Kiewit Hall that will serve as engineering’s academic hub and house the school’s construction programs in Lincoln beginning in summer 2023 (https://durhamschool.link/KiewitHall).
Persons in these positions are expected to be based in Lincoln and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Durham School; conduct original impactful research; actively participate in service, outreach, and community engagement; and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in all areas of the university mission.
Successful candidates are expected to teach courses in at least two of the following areas: project management; virtual design in construction; estimating; construction contracts; project delivery methods; heavy construction; and/or sustainability in construction.
Numerous opportunities for collaborations across the University of Nebraska exist, including with the Nebraska Transportation Center and Midwest Roadside Safety Facility; the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience; Nebraska Innovation Campus; and other state- and federally-funded research centers and programs. Faculty at the University of Nebraska have access to many resources, including the Holland Computing Center, which manages supercomputing facilities.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in construction management, construction engineering, or a closely related field. They should have a strong record of scholarly achievement that is commensurate for the desired professorial rank and demonstrated commitments to excellence in teaching and to participating in collaborative activities across disciplines. Candidates must also demonstrate readiness to advance inclusive excellence and diversity, as these are core values in our school, college, and university. Candidates for the rank of assistant professor should have the potential for establishing an externally-funded research program, while candidates for the rank of associate or full professor should have a strong record of publications and externally-funded research grants.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have research expertise in at least one of the following areas: innovative project management and delivery methods; sustainability, adaptability, and/or resiliency of the built environment under normal and/or extreme conditions; emerging technologies (e.g., simulations, sensing, robotics, machine learning, technology-human interface) to revolutionize planning, construction, and building operation and maintenance; and future construction workforce development.
Additionally for the rank of associate or full professor, preferred candidates are those who have experience partnering with industry as well as leading interdisciplinary research teams.
