Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Materials Science & Engineering

Regula, Full-time, Pay Grade 00

Position in X-ray and Neutron Characterization of AM Alloys

The University of Tennessee is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a post-doctoral associate position focused on the X-ray and neutron scattering investigation of hybrid metals made by solid state additive manufacturing (AM) processes. This position resides in the University of Tennessee (UT)-Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Joint Institute for Advanced Materials (JIAM), Department of Materials Science and Engineering, supervised by Prof. Katharine Page.  The successful candidate will work with a diverse research and development team, specifically investigating process-structure-property correlations in titanium- and aluminum-based AM alloys across material length scales.

The candidate will use on-campus facilities at JIAM and at X-ray and neutron user facilities to characterize spatial variations in microstructure, residual stress, and accumulated plastic strain. Metal-ceramic composite structures and interfaces may also be explored. The position will allow the post-doctoral researcher to develop expertise, broaden experience and to interact with a diverse set of scientists at UT and with several collaborating institutions/industrial partners.

The applicant must be a US citizen and have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or a related field.

The ideal candidate will have experience in metal and/or metal-ceramic composite microstructures, experience with laboratory-based characterization (diffraction, microscopy, and physical property measurements), expertise and interest in neutron and synchrotron methods for advanced structural characterization (both experiments and data analysis), and a demonstrated track record in publishing.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. The candidate must be available for occasional travel to national user facilities and partner organizations.

Interested candidates should apply online at the University of Tennessee Human Resources website and should include a cover letter summarizing their qualifications and a curriculum vitae that includes contact information for three professional references. Questions about the position should be directed to Professor Page ([email protected]).
