The Physician Assistant Department at Point Loma Nazarene University invites applications for a non-tenure track faculty position as Academic Principal Faculty beginning in the Summer of 2022. This faculty member serves full-time with rank appropriate to the applicant’s experience.  

The primary responsibility of the Academic Principal Faculty member is to support the evaluation and implementation of the didactic curriculum in support of the Director of Didactic Education.  Specific tasks include the following:

  1. Develop and prepare course material such as syllabi, objectives, assigned readings, evaluation, instruments, course/lecture objectives, evaluations and other educational materials.
  2. Evaluate course performance at the close of the semester and make recommendations to faculty for modifications if indicated by the evaluation.
  3. Develop, schedule and coordinate the clinical labs taught during the first year curriculum.

      a. Recruit lecturers (adjunct and guest lecturers) for didactic sessions

 

      b. Set up and take down special equipment and other supplies used in the clinical skills lab sessions

 

      c. Maintain supplies used in clinical labs

 

      d. Arrange or provide lab instruction as appropriate

 

      e. Maintain communication (lecture confirmation, thank you letters, etc.) with all lecturers and lab instructors.

 

  1. Develop written examinations for specific courses and assure their correlation to lecture material covered at the appropriate level for the learning objective.  Incorporate item analysis in the post-exam review.
  2. Provide lectures and serve as a lab instructor to the first year students on topics in areas of expertise and interest. 
  3. Maintain a computerized item bank of test questions for all courses. 

General Responsibilities

  1. Participate in faculty meetings, Progress and Promotions Committee, Curriculum Committee and Admissions Committee.
  2. Follow the academic progress and provide academic counseling and recommendations for learning community students
  3. Review and critique patient databases/work-ups submitted by advisees as part of their course work.
  4. Submit semester grade reports to the Registrar’s Office and post grades for all students.  PA faculty is given a progress report on their advisees.
  5. Plan and develop instructional modalities that help students develop problem solving skills.
  6. Coordinate schedules and other activities with other first year basic science course directors as appropriate.
  7. Participate in faculty development and other related course work, seminars, workshops to remain current.
  8. Support and participate in state, national organizations to promote the profession and strengthen network resources.
  9. Maintain credential to practice (state, national) i.e., CME.
  10. Counsel and advise approximately 7-9 students per class year regarding

                        1.  academic performance and clinical performance

                        2.  program related concerns

                        3.  selection of clinical electives

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program
  • Minimum of a master’s degree – doctorate preferred
  • NCCPA certified
  • Licensed (or eligible for licensure) as a physician assistant in California.
  • Prior academic experience preferred but not required
