ABOUT BERRY COLLEGE:

Located on more than 27,000 acres in northwest Georgia in a setting of great natural beauty, Berry College has an enrollment of about 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students. The college is located in Rome, Georgia, 75 miles northwest of Atlanta and 75 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Berry Center for Integrity in Leadership (BCIL) inspires and prepares students to become leaders with integrity who improve the communities in which they live, work, and serve. The Elvin and Fleta Patterson Sims Director will lead BCIL into its next decade, further cultivating the center's signature programing and creating new opportunities for leadership and character development. The Director will report to the Associate Provost.

Mentorship is at the core of BCIL and is also one of the distinctive features of the broader Berry College education. As a natural corollary to BCIL's Carper Mentoring Program, the Director will facilitate and promote the strategic development, training, and support of faculty and staff mentorship at the college.

The Director's responsibilities fall into five categories:

Carper Mentoring Program. Now in its tenth year, the Center's Carper Mentoring Program connects small groups of juniors and seniors with mentors from the local community for a year-long program. The Director will collaborate with the head mentor to tend the vision and direction of this signature mentoring program, provide program structure and coaching for mentors from the local community, and recruit a corps of local mentors from diverse sectors and backgrounds.

Campus Events. Develop and execute an annual programming plan that engages the campus community in the formation of ethical leadership, which includes the Cecil B. Wright III Integrity in Leadership Lecture Series (one of the college's signature lecture series), topic-based panels, and other events.

Student Programming and Mentoring. Build and improve inclusive leadership development opportunities for students across the college community from diverse backgrounds and identities. Mentor and coach students to grow as leaders with integrity.

Faculty Development and Curricular Innovation. The Director will lead an endowed faculty development program for course development and scholarship focused on integrity in leadership. The Director will collaborate with academic leaders to create new course-based opportunities for students. While the directorship is a staff position, there is the opportunity to teach courses related to integrity in leadership as an affiliate of an academic department or program.

Resource for College-wide Mentorship. Berry College has long been distinguished by a culture of mentorship. The Director will facilitate and promote the college's efforts to equip more intentionally faculty and staff to be effective mentors to students, in collaboration with key faculty and staff leaders.

 


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline required. Ph.D. preferred.
  • Three to five years of program leadership, including budget oversight and consultative strategic planning skills.

PREFERRED CHARACTERSITICS:

  •  Relevant experience in the practice and development of mentoring and applied learning.
  •  Understanding of the academic literature on leadership.
  •  Understanding of the challenges and professional undercurrents of higher education.

HISTORY

Berry was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry (1865-1942) as a school for enterprising rural boys when few public schools existed in Georgia. A girls' school was added in 1909. Berry became one of the nation's most successful educational experiments, combining academic study, student work and interdenominational Christian religious emphasis. Berry has an excellent record of sound growth. A junior college was established in 1926 and a four-year college in 1930; graduate programs were added in 1972.
