East Carolina University has recently restructured its coastal enterprise, aligning research on its Greenville, NC campus with expansion of the Outer Banks campus (the Coastal Studies Institute (CSI), near Manteo, NC). CSI is a growing interinstitutional research and education enterprise that undertakes innovative basic and applied coastal research from a scenic new waterfront campus on Roanoke Island, and houses the new interdisciplinary Department of Coastal Studies (DCS).
Primarily a research department, the DCS coordinates and enhances research communities across ECU’s Greenville campuses, the Outer Banks campus, our partner Institutions, and with associates around the world. DCS provides ECU with a strong center and point of contact to expand its leadership role in addressing interdisciplinary coastal and marine issues. The Department of Coastal Studies includes faculty and postdocs on both the ECU-Greenville campus and the ECU-Outer Banks campus. These locations enable faculty to take advantage of the resources available on the main campus, as well as having cutting-edge laboratories, classrooms, and boating facilities directly on the Croatan Sound. Existing DCS/CSI faculty and research staff have expertise in applied geography, interdisciplinary coastal studies, engineering, coupled human-natural processes, anthropology and ethnography, fisheries ecology, remote sensing, hydrology, and physical oceanography.

Job Duties :

East Carolina University invites applications from recent graduates with a PhD related to marine fisheries or natural resource management to conduct collaborative research on ocean resource conflicts and small-scale fisheries as part of a NSF Belmont Forum funded research project “Negotiating Ocean Conflicts among Rivals for Sustainable and Equitable Solutions (NOCRISES) The postdoctoral fellowship offers the successful candidate the opportunity to work as part of an international research team and to engage with colleagues working on similar case-studies in Australia, Bangladesh, South Africa, and Europe.

The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative, scientific research on community-based subsistence fishing areas in Hawai`i. Responsibilities include participating in regular meetings with international collaborators, contributing to joint publications conference presentations, and grant proposals, and co-mentoring graduate and under-graduate students.

Duties include: collecting information and analyze resource use management issues in the context of small-scale fisheries on Hawai`i, reviewing the historical context of community-based subsistence fishing areas (CBSFAs), assessing stakeholder’ perceptions of fishery management, reviewing and mapping governance issues of CBSFAs, identifying potential trade-offs in fishery management priorities among different stakeholders, and developing independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including biosafety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 100% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to the project activities described above and related scientific research.
The postdoc will work under the mentorship of Drs. Nadine Heck and Siddharth Narayan at East Carolina University and will be co-advised by Dr. Adina Paytan at the University of California Santa Cruz. The position will be located at ECU’s Outer Banks Campus, the Coastal Studies Institute, on Roanoke Island, with field work conducted in Hawai’i.

Minimum Education/Experience :

Proficiency in English Excellent written and oral communication skillsA PhD in geography or another social science discipline, natural resource management, environmental studies, Hawaiian studies, or a similar field. A background and training in qualitative and quantitative social science skills including interviews, focus groups, and/or surveys.Ability to work as part of an international team.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Familiarity with and/or experience working with communities in Hawai`i or other Pacific Islands.
High motivation to, and previous experience with, work on social-ecological issues.
Experience with governance mapping, participatory qualitative modeling, cultural consensus analysis, or multi-criteria analysis.
