Animal Lab Technician, Department of Pharmacology & Physiology - Georgetown University Medical Center

As one of approximately 140 academic health and science centers in the United States, Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) seeks to provide, in a synergistic fashion, excellence in education - training physicians, nurses and other health care professionals, as well as biomedical scientists - and cutting-edge interdisciplinary research collaboration, enhancing our basic science and translational biomedical research capacity in order to improve human health. Its Department of Pharmacology & Physiology is home to four unique and competitive graduate education programs. Each program has its own separate admission and curricular requirements. Students are encouraged to research each one extensively before applying.

The Animal Lab Technician provides technical assistance with experimental work in non-human primates on studies examining brain mechanisms of social behavior and sensorimotor gating in non-human primates to identify new strategies to treat neuropsychiatric disorders.

Reporting to a Professor and an Associate Professor, and working with postdoctoral scholars and graduate fellows, the Animal Lab Technician as duties include but are not limited to:
  • Run behavioral, pharmacological experiments
  • Set up equipment, assist in procedures, conduct observations, handle and train experimental animals, and help with data analysis
  • Assist in the day-to-day running of the lab - for example, ordering supplies preemptively, working with vendors, and preparing regulatory paperwork
  • Assist with veterinary procedures on animals


Qualifications
  • BA or MS in Cognitive Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology, Psychology, or a related field
  • Experience with animals
  • Ability to comfortably handle and care for animals
  • Computer capabilities
  • Good manual dexterity/technical skills
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Proactive approach


Preferred qualification

Experience with awake-behaving primates

Training in specific tasks will be provided to the candidate selected for employment.
