Part Time Instructors for Urban Teaching Residency Program

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Oct 04, 2021
Deadline:

The Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania seeks part-time instructors to teach courses in the Urban Teaching Residency program during the Spring 2022 and/or Summer 2022 terms. UTR seeks instructors who will create a climate that embraces excellence and diversity, with a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring that enhances the work of the department and attracts and retains a diverse student body.

The Urban Teaching Residency (UTR) program is organized around issues of equity, social justice, and anti-racism as well as research-based frameworks of teaching and learning. UTR offers students the ability to earn a master's degree while continuing to work full-time. UTR students who would like to earn their master's degree plus Pennsylvania instructional and/or special education certification may also do so.

We are hiring instructors for the following courses:

School and Society, Spring 2022: This course provides students with an opportunity to investigate the philosophical underpinnings, social context, and current discourse of education and schooling in the United States. By historically linking the development of educational initiatives to notions of power, nation building, and citizenship, this class furthers an understanding of the assumptions about the purpose of education within this democratic nation, and its role(s) within our current social and political climate. Discussions of differential access to power and resources are central to this class, providing a forum for critically exploring educational policy, teaching practices, and the purposes of education that are intimately connected to the social stratification and reproduction.

Advanced Methods: Humanities, Summer 2022: This course gives working teachers (in middle and high school) intensive, hands-on practice with research-based pedagogy that they need to address the immediate challenges of teaching humanities in urban public schools. Students develop plans for a full course, several conceptual units, and eight weeks of daily lesson plans. In addition, students develop and present various instructional routines, which the class critiques. Finally, students share resources with each other and engage in problem-solving.

Vision

As engines of knowledge and new ideas, universities have the unique potential to define the future rather than be defined by it; to pioneer change rather than merely manage it. To do so requires a plan both visionary and pragmatic. The Penn Compact 2022 motivates community members to innovate, be radically inclusive, and positively impact their local, national, and global communities.

Penn’s fundamental priorities — increasing access, integrating knowledge and engaging locally, nationally and globally — are supported by the three core values that make us uniquely Penn: inclusion, innovation, and impact.
