Associate Professor of the Practice, Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences

Tracking Code2742Job Description

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) invites applications for the inaugural MassMutual non-tenure-track Associate Professor of the Practice in Computing & Data Sciences, beginning as early as January 1, 2022. Qualifications required of all applicants include extensive experience commensurate with a PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by contemporary, real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Founded in 2019, the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences is a university-wide, degree-granting academic unit focused on core and applied areas of computing, computational, and data-driven inquiry. Housed in an iconic 19-story building with a convention-bending design to be completed in 2022, CDS complements traditional cognate academic disciplines by laying the foundation for innovation-driven, civic-minded computing to maximize the real-world impact of research, curricular, and co-curricular programs that are thematically aligned with strategic goals of the university. Additional information about the Faculty is available at https://www.bu.edu/cds.

Seeded by a $1-million gift from MassMutual to Boston University, the MassMutual Associate Professor of the Practice will teach four courses in core data science subjects per academic year, and will be responsible for supervision of directed studies and capstone projects for undergraduate and graduate students, including those pursued in collaboration with external partners. The successful candidate will take on a key leadership role in overseeing programming associated with this extraordinary partnership. This includes mentoring students in the MassMutual Externship program, leading CDS outreach and community-building events, and contributing to CDS’s overall mission of leveraging computing and data science for real-world, societally relevant impact in collaboration with partnering organizations at the University and beyond.

Particular attention will be given to candidates with a record of pedagogical innovation in topics that are relevant to data science, most notably software and data engineering, data mining, machine learning, and AI. Candidates from underrepresented groups and those who have a track record of broadening participation in computing and data science are encouraged to apply. Initial appointment will be for a renewable three-year term with future longer-term appointments expected.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
