POSITION: Assistant or Associate Professor of Sociology and Peacebuilding and Development
DESCRIPTION: This opening is for one full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the Sociology and Peacebuilding & Development Programs beginning academic year 2022-2023. The faculty member will contribute to our undergraduate programs advising students and teaching in the areas of Theories of Social Change, Peacebuilding and Development, and Global Studies with the possibility of graduate-level teaching.
The sociology major invites students to actively engage with a vision for just communities, offering students the opportunity to generate scholarship and activism that addresses significant and complex social problems facing our world today. The major includes concentrations in criminal justice, environmental studies, planning and public administration, human and social services, anthropology, and business and management.
The Peacebuilding & Development (PXD) Program focuses on understanding and promoting constructive social change toward peace, justice, and well-being for people in situations affected by conflict, poverty, and inequality. The major has an emphasis on the development of practical skills through experiential learning though campus and local practice opportunities and a practicum in the field. The PXD Program also offers individual majors in Peacebuilding and in Global Development as well as an accelerated master’s degree in partnership with the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at EMU.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in Sociology, Peace, Conflict and Justice Studies, or a related field. ABD candidates will be considered. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching at the college/university level, some familiarity with hybrid or online formats, as well as using participatory, engaged pedagogical practices. The strongest candidates will demonstrate knowledge of and have teaching experience around social justice concerns, including but not limited to racial justice, LGBTQ+ and queer theory, gender justice, and environmental justice. RESPONSIBILITIES: To serve as an Assistant/Associate Professor for the School of Social Sciences and Professions. Courses to be taught include sociological theory, which is a writing-intensive course taught in an on-campus classroom format. Areas of specializations are open but preference will be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: sociology; peace, conflict, and justice studies; conflict analysis, resolution and transformation; mediation and facilitation; peacebuilding theory and action; restorative justice; criminology; environmental justice; qualitative research methods; social movements.
POSITION DETAILS: Nine-month contract, 24 semester hours per year. Salary determined by education and experience. EMU uses a tenure with post-tenure review contract system.
