The Department of Statistical Sciences and the Human Biology Program in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a joint (66% Department of Statistical Sciences and 34% Human Biology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) full-time continuing teaching stream position in the area of Statistics for Life Sciences. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.
Applicants must have at least a Masters degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or a related discipline, and have at least one year of Life Sciences research experience by the time of appointment, and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We understand that an individual can gain research experience in a variety of different settings and we welcome those with relevant non-standard Life Sciences research experience. A PhD in a relevant area by the time of the appointment, or shortly thereafter, is preferred. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths in both Statistical Sciences and Human Biology.
Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree granting program at the undergraduate program level including Statistics and quantitative research methods courses; have experience using and teaching statistical software which might include but is not limited to R or Python; and have experience collaborating on quantitative research in the Life Sciences. Candidates also must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Experience working with, teaching, or mentoring diverse groups or diverse students is an asset.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.
Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
