Job Summary

This postdoctoral research position will focus on high precision spectroscopy of a variety of elements including beryllium, boron, oxygen, nitrogen, and barium. The goal of this work is to improve the experimental accuracy of several key energy levels to assist in developing multi-electron theoretical models and, ultimately, serve as a test quantum electrodynamics (QED).

Experience in spectroscopy, working with laser frequency doubling cavities, and laser stabilization is strongly desired. There is also an optional teaching opportunity available for applicants who are interested in gaining teaching experience.

Essential Functions

Conduct research in Professor Will Williams’ experimental atomic physics laboratory and mentor undergraduate students. The research focuses on high precision spectroscopy of various elements as a test of fundamental theories.

Provide assistance in the mentoring and instruction of undergraduate researchers in the lab.

Assist in writing of research manuscripts and external grant proposals.

Participate in research group activities.

May teach a course.

Back up other staff needs as necessary and perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

PhD

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Atomic Physics or a related field

Skills

Ability to work with both diode lasers and a ti:sapphire laser.

Ability to align optical cavities and frequency doubling cavities.

Experience in precision spectroscopy, particularly spectroscopy in vapor cells, hollow cathode lamps, and atomic beams, is highly desirable.
