OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY:

Perform journeyman level carpentry work in the construction, renovation and repair of Medical Center buildings, additions, and fixtures; provide guidance and direction to labor team on assigned projects; coordinate work of team with other trades.

WORK PERFORMED: Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned and a more comprehensive task list may be provided.

Perform journeyman level carpentry work in the construction, renovation and repair of Medical Center buildings, additions, and fixtures to include floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, and screens from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions.

Lead team of Duke and contractor construction carpenters and helpers to complete projects and service requests according to specifications and directions from supervisors.

Plan work for the group ensuring adequate staffing to complete projects in timely and efficient manner; report staffing issues to supervisor.

Interpret blueprints, plans, sketches and diagrams to properly complete assigned projects.

Monitor and inspect work to ensure compliance the applicable codes and procedures; direct any rework or modifications.

Ensure that employees and contract labor are properly trained to perform duties; ensure a safe work environment; ensure compliance with Medical Center and OSHA safety regulations.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE

Work requires 5 to 7 years of broad experience in construction carpentry to acquire knowledge of the methods and techniques of the carpentry trade. Lead worker or project experience required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid N.C. Driver's license and a driving history acceptable under the guidelines of the Safe Driving Policy.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one or small group situations with customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Must respect the privacy of patients and maintain the confidentiality of any patient information related to their treatment. Ability to complete daily records, logs, and time sheets.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or more.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, long had been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892, where Benjamin Newton Duke served as a primary benefactor and link with the Duke family until his death in 1929. In December 1924, the provisions of indenture by Benjamin’s brother, James B.
