The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Description:

The Academic Achievement Center supports the needs of students as they persist towards an undergraduate degree and develop into life-long learners.
Complementing the efforts of the teaching faculty, students are served through a personalized and structured approach that includes tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic skill development, and outreach workshops on learning skills. The Academic Achievement Center partners with faculty, staff, and administrators in upholding the mission, standards, and requirements of the University.
We offer a diverse environment that is respectful, nurturing, and challenging for all students and staff. While supporting our students’ development, this position is also intended to provide an invaluable educational component to the Graduate Assistant as well. Graduate Assistants in this position strengthen their communication strategies (individual, small-group, large-group, in-person and online), develop an in-depth understanding of learning and time management strategies, and learn how to measure student growth over time.

Position

The AAC includes professional staff, graduate assistants, and undergraduate students who work collaboratively to accomplish division and office goals. In this position, the Graduate Assistant will be supervised by Chris Dizon.

Graduate Assistant Responsibilities

Develop an understanding of, and competency in, various academic skills, including but not limited to: time management, note taking, memory and concentration, test taking, reading comprehension, and test anxiety, through continual training and support from AAC staff.

Conduct individualized and small-group academic skills sessions with students.
Work with students to develop personal, realistic, and achievable action plans.
Conduct intake interviews and evaluate needs for students who request our services.
Administer study skills assessments and discuss results with students.
Facilitate engaging and student-centered group sessions on learning strategies.
Refer students to appropriate campus services when possible and/or necessary.
Submit student accomplishment forms upon completion of students’ action plans.
Represent the Academic Achievement Center in a professional and positive light.
Assist in outreach projects such as classroom and faculty presentations.
Email and/or post on social media on behalf of the department, as needed.
Assist with events, such as Fall Kickoff, Transfer Information Programs, and First Finals Fest.

Documentation and reporting including:

Complete session records within 48 hours of session date.
Submit student action plans, attendance sheets, and other session documentation within 48 hours of occurrence or creation.
Meet weekly with supervisor and Skills team to discuss projects and updates.
Other duties as assigned.

Time Commitment:

20 hours/week during office hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.) for the Fall 2021 semester and for the Spring 2022 semester. Specific hours will be determined in cooperation with the position’s supervisor based on office needs. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Compensation: Students are compensated $6,000 for each semester of employment; the Academic Achievement Center does not provide tuition waivers.

Skills and Qualifications:

Strong academic performance.
Ability to interact with faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students in a professional and personable manner.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Comfort with large- and small-group presentation development and public speaking.

Basic understanding of computers and Microsoft and Google products is necessary, additional training will be provided.
Ability to be flexible and work independently in a fast-paced and ever-changing higher education environment.

Graduate Assistants have the latitude to apply their skills and knowledge to new situations and are encouraged to make informed decisions in the course of their work with support and guidance from the supervisor. For this reason, strong decision-making skills and comfort with translating knowledge and experience to new situations is strongly desired.

Supervision and/or previous teaching experience preferred.

To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
• Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
• Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
• Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
• Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
