The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science has an opening for a Senior IT Specialist to work within the Maryland Poison Center (MPC). Reporting to the Executive Director of the Maryland Poison Center, the Senior IT Specialist position provides direct support for the MPC's overall IT and telephony environment. The Senior IT Specialist is actively involved in several technical responsibilities, including identifying and resolving security vulnerabilities, server and storage management, network and firewall design and other security decisions followed by implementation. The Senior IT Specialist will be expected to develop, implement, and manage goals and objectives and participate in strategic planning with MPC, School of Pharmacy Computer and Network Services (CNS), and campus Center for Information Technology Services (CITS). Established in 1841, the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is the fourth oldest school of pharmacy in the United States. As a leader in pharmacy education, scientific discovery, patient care, and community engagement, the School conducts cutting edge research and engages in a wide variety of professional practice activities to improve the health and well-being of citizens in the state of Maryland and beyond.  The MD Poison Center (a subsidiary of the School of Pharmacy) provides high quality poison information and prevention services to the public and healthcare professionals while decreasing the cost and complexity of poisoning and overdose care. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.  JOB SUMMARY:The Senior IT Specialist is responsible to implement, create new and modify existing databases,that support existing operational MPC applications and reports, provide direct support for the MPC servers (physical and virtual), PCs (physical and virtual), and provide information and support for the direction of the MPC’s IT/telephony infrastructure. The incumbent must also be capable of doing database development and deployment, new application development, report writing and development of production processes, and LAN management.PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides broad range of expert technical knowledge to develop integrated solutions and solve hardware/software issues that are varied in nature and critical to MPC operations.
  • Provides research, analysis, design, and problem resolution for increasingly complex technical issues that will impact MPC infrastructure, networks and/or the technical aspects of campus computing systems. Provide knowledge and experience of VMware’s vSphere server virtualization technologies including designing, setup and supporting virtual servers and workstations Provide knowledge and experience of contemporary Microsoft Windows server and Windows Desktop operating systems. Provide experience with Microsoft SQL Server Database Management Services (DBMS). Maintain MPC IT budgetary responsibility and provide strategic direction to the Executive Director. Development, testing and execution of disaster recovery plans. Ensure MPC complies with USM Security requirements and address IT Audit issues. Support existing and create new applications/databases Support existing and create new reports from MPC data Work with Avaya telephony support vendors to maintain MPC telephony related systems Provides IT administrative support to the Maryland Poison Center
  • Maintain written documentation of MPC IT related processes
  • Work with the MPC LAN Administrator to support MPC IT operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Note: The Maryland Poison Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This position is considered essential to the daily operations within the MPC

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education: Bachelor’s in information technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering or a related field.Experience: Five (5) years of related experience with at least three (3) year of experience specializing in a technical discipline.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
  • Thorough knowledge of database development/design
  • Ability to use a wide range of IT database and development tools
  • Experience with VMWare
  • Ability to create reports from a wide range of database applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
