Position Description:The College of Charleston’s Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 16, 2022. We seek a colleague to contribute to our “Difference in Literary, Cultural, and Rhetorical Studies” requirement of all majors. This faculty member should be a specialist either in African American Literature or in Black Technical and Professional Writing. Required qualifications include a PhD in English, Technical Writing, Writing Studies, or African American Studies. Successful applicants will demonstrate excellence in teaching and a research program in African American Literature or Black Technical Writing.
The Department of English is committed to a diverse and inclusive educational environment and especially encourages applicants from underrepresented groups. The department offers a BA in English with 3 concentrations—Creative Writing; Literature and Film; Writing, Rhetoric, and Publication—and an MA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing. For faculty members with an active research program, the ordinary teaching assignment is 3/3. Teaching duties will include all levels, from First Year Writing to undergraduate courses in the major (in either English Literature or in Writing, Rhetoric, and Publication) and master’s courses in English. Faculty are encouraged to develop special topics courses fueled by their interests; to pursue interdisciplinary program affiliations such as with our African American Studies or Women’s and Gender Studies programs; and to mentor undergraduate independent studies and Bachelor’s Essays.
Responsibilities of every faculty member include a commitment to teaching excellence, maintaining an outstanding program of research, and providing service to the department and College.
The College of Charleston is located in historic downtown Charleston in a coastal metropolitan area of 800,000. The College is a public, liberal arts and sciences institution with a student body of approximately 10,000 undergraduate students and 900 graduate students, 20% of whom identify as minority, and 140 international students from 34 different countries. Academics
