Position Description

Position is accountable to the Associate Dean, School of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing

Typical schedule will be Monday and Wednesday 8:00 – 2:00 and Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 – 1:30. While these hours are typical, they may be subject to change as workload and needs of our customers and work areas change. This part-time position is 19 hours per week and will work 42 weeks out of 52 per year.

Duties & Responsibilities

General Responsibilities:
1. Laboratory Support:

  • Recommend lab procedural and safety discussions topics to the instructors based on observed student practices in the lab.
  • Monitor attendance and use of the lab.
  • Assist the instructors with the setting up of major lab activities for students.
  • Issue lab procedure worksheets and assist instructors by ensuring students are not assigned to work stations or equipment they are not proficient to operate.
  • Coordinate the activities of work-study students as directed by the instructor.
  • Assist the program instructors with the procurement of materials and supplies (including pickup and delivery).
  • Report repair requirements on all lab equipment to instructors.
  • Maintain an inventory of instructional materials and equipment within the lab.
  • Maintain inventories of supplies, tools, and parts for the program and students.
  • Assist instructors in identifying equipment and minor tool needs.
  • Participate in in-service training and industrial workshops pertaining to the operation and applications of lab equipment.
  • Maintain proficiency in the Woods field as needed to support the Wood Science program.

  • 2. Student Support:
  • Assist students with their use of facilities and equipment.
  • Proctor tests, quizzes and performance assessments administered in the lab.
  • Assist with remediation of students.
  • Demonstrate proper equipment operation skills to students as needed, as directed by the instructors.
  • Prepare instructional materials for student lab projects.
  • Assist the instructors in monitoring students on operational safety.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the instructor of similar scope to Laboratory and Student Support functions and requiring compatible skills.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years’ (4,000 hours) experience and/or two (2) years’ post-secondary education appropriate to the position.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of woods terminology, tools, and equipment.
  • Good computer and office skills, and ability to utilize and assist with course specific software, and to maintain written and electronic inventory records and documents.
  • Experience working with others in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner, and the ability to work with individuals of various backgrounds, ages, and capabilities in an educational setting.
  • Valid Wisconsin drivers’ license.
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications:
  • OSHA lift-truck certification.
  • Physical Demands

    Working Activity:

    More than 100 pounds with help: Less than 1 repetition per hour

    Additional Physical Requirements:
    Vision: Adequate with aid to read instructions, labels, documents, computer screens, maintain drivers license and differentiate between colors.

    Hearing: Adequate with aid to understand oral requests, telephone conversation, and PA systems.
