Job Description:

Budget Title: Instructional Support Assistant (SL-1)

Salary: $38,600 (Full-time, Temporary)

This temporary position will play a critical role in the relocation of the Binghamton University Libraries' Annex in Conklin to the new Collection Management Facility (CMF) in Johnson City. The Annex houses approximately 950,000 volumes: mainly journal and monograph collections. These collections are the subject of several projects, which have to be completed before the move. The incumbent in this position will support those projects, primarily by updating item records, processing volumes through CaiaSoft (web-based inventory management software), and assisting with inventory organization and deselection projects. The ability to interact successfully with a variety of personalities is essential. Because this position is focused on processing and updating Libraries collections, the incumbent is required to have the manual strength and dexterity to retrieve, relocate, and reshelve items: including individual volumes, document boxes, book trays, and book trucks. As such, the incumbent must be able to carry and push an excess of 50 pounds regular weight while standing, walking and/or squatting. The incumbent reports to the Associate Head of Reader Services for Physical Collection Management. The Collection Management Facility Supervisor will also assist in overseeing and directing the incumbent's work.

Duties:

  • Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • Participates in the relocation of the current Annex facility to the new Collection Management Facility (CMF) facility. The primary work will include accessioning materials into CaiaSoft: this involves sorting book trays and accurately recording volume/tray location information into our inventory management system. Other activities related to this relocation include assisting with item deselection and organization projects, updating item records, and assisting with other inventory management activities as directed by CMF Supervisor and the Associate Head of Reader Services for Physical Collections Management.
  • Processes cataloged items, donated gifts and other items transferred from other Binghamton University Libraries' locations to the Annex/CMF. This includes updating bibliographic and item information in the Libraries' web-based services platform and item information in an inventory management system. Takes part in inventory control projects, such as barcoding and linking journals.
  • Participates in daily collection management routines. Assures that books, journals and other Libraries' materials that have been paged or added to CMF collections are well-organized. Resolves problems related to missing items, location, call number and labeling. Performs minor preservation maintenance of CMF materials in consultation with Special Collections Staff.
  • Assists with other Annex/CMF routines: opening and/or closing, answering patron inquiries, monitoring reading room activities, equipment maintenance, monitoring the building for environmental and/or security issues and reporting to appropriate staff.

Requirements:

  • Associate degree
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and anti-racism and working to advance a workplace culture that strives to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias
  • Ability to learn and apply various types of software and technologies
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to move heavy loads on wheeled carts or pallets and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to retrieve, relocate, and shelve individual items as well as full document boxes, book trays, and book trucks, sometimes using a step stool, ladder, or mechanical order picker.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with library systems
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet software
  • Proven ability to work in a warehouse environment involving inventory control

Working at Binghamton University

Message on working at Binghamton University from President Harvey Stenger

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DMKyZ37krc&feature=youtu.be

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.

Mission Statement

Binghamton University is a premier public university dedicated to enriching the lives of people in the region, state, nation and world through discovery and education and to being enriched by partnerships with those communities.

Vision Statement

Binghamton as an institution is dedicated to higher education, one that combines an international reputation for graduate education, research, scholarship and creative endeavor with the best undergraduate programs available at any public university.

We are an academically selective community that shares ideas across departments, disciplines and borders. We encourage faculty, students and staff to ask unexpected questions, foster open dialog and develop innovative solutions to important problems.
