This position will provide career counseling to NOVA students and will teach career-related Student Development courses with a specialized focus on an assigned set of disciplines. The Career Counselor will work with the career counseling team to identify and utilize career assessments and other resources to assist students with career decision-making. The Career Counselor will develop and evaluate pre-employment skills opportunities such as resume workshops, interview preparation, business site visits and assist with recruiting events for NOVA students. This position will support the career planning and development team with the development and maintenance of the division’s website and resources. The Career Counselor will work with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and businesses to update and share career information and opportunities related to assigned disciplines. The Career Counselor will work closely with student services and academic advisors to provide timely, data-driven information about industry trends and other relevant information regarding their assigned disciplines. Regular work hours are during weekdays with some evening hours, as well as occasional weekend hours. Participates in regular professional development as required and/or relevant to the assigned work.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.KSA's/Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of counseling theory including career development and multicultural counseling theory.
- Skill in providing career counseling to adults.
- Strong interpersonal skills to help engage and provide support to students with a focus on career development
- Ability to advise with consideration for the student’s interests, qualifications, and career goals
- Ability to work with College faculty and staff in support of career development outcomes as related to select academics pathways at NOVA
- Familiarity with online career technologies including Symplicity
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population
- Excellent customer service skills, to include the ability to effectively follow up and follow through
- Effective written, interpersonal and presentations skills, with small and large groups
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks in a timely manner.
- Ability to design and implement programs including career workshops and major events.
- Effective problem-solving and organizational skills
- Ability to use and analyze data to evaluate and improve programs
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team
- Knowledge of relevant federal, state, VCCS, and college policies and regulations including the Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA), Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Title IX, and VAWA/SaVE, and Clery legislation
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in counseling, college student development or related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in counseling. Qualifying degrees and coursework must be from a regionally accredited institution.Preferred Qualifications:
Career or other counseling credential such as Master Career Counselor (MCC) or National Certified Counselor (NCC). Experience working as a career counselor. Experience teaching career planning and development courses and workshops. Experience working in a community college setting. Operation of a State Vehicle:
