Overview

The Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies is an interdisciplinary academic unit with a core mission to support teaching and research on all aspects of the Greek world and the broader Hellenic Mediterranean, from ancient times to the present. In the immediate years ahead, the Seeger Center is poised for substantial growth in faculty and curriculum, as well as new research initiatives on campus and at the Princeton Athens Center.

 

The Center Manager of The Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies works closely with the Executive Director to execute policy and conduct the day-to-day management, for the effective operation of the Seeger Center.

While the Director establishes the academic and intellectual direction of the Center and while the Executive Director operationalizes and implements the Director’s vision, the Center Manager provides the necessary administrative support for the Director’s priorities, as articulated and assigned by the Executive Director.

The Center Manager’s main areas of responsibility are: (a) budget and financial management; (b) academic management; (c) staff supervision.

Responsibilities

Budget and financial management

 

  • Develops the administrative budget in collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Responsible for careful and appropriate management of the budget, including administrative allowance, as well as all endowed and/or restricted funds.
  • Monitors all spending and provides to the Executive Director regular and timely analysis and projections of the available funds (these include a significant number of endowments that the Center Manager monitors closely for stewardship purposes).
  • Establishes and communicates internal controls for relevant staff members in order to safeguard University assets, maintains accurate and reliable accounting information, promotes operational efficiency, and encourages adherence to prescribed policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the integrity (validity, accuracy, and completeness) of transactions and the reporting of financial activities, reported on a granular level monthly and annually.

Academic management

  • Program in Hellenic Studies: Supervises the administration of the program, with administrative oversight of the large undergraduate and graduate programs, including administration of the teaching budget; course proposals, and enrollment information; monitors student records, manage graduate admissions, administers graduate student prizes and fellowships; course planning;
  • Faculty and Visiting Scholars: Coordinates searches and processes all DOF appointments, and visitor and fellowship programs, inclusive of background checks, visas, travel arrangements, lodgings, honoraria, teaching assignments.
  • Governance: Working with the Executive Director, assists in the planning and coordination of meetings and preparing materials: agendas, supporting documentation) for meetings.
  • International: Supervises Seeger Center staff who provide logistical support for Princeton courses in Greece. Supports the Executive Director in the administration of research opportunities in Greece. Travels for short-term on-site work at the Princeton Athens Center, as needed. Committee for the Study of Late Antiquity (CSLA): Supervises Budget and Program Manager: Budget, finances, reporting; CSLA Executive committee meetings; postdoctoral fellowship; graduate top-ups and summer funding; activities and events; prizes
  • Events: Plans, budgets, publicizes and implements all major events, including workshops, seminars, lectures, conferences, Class Day, Seeger Trustees meetings and activities; faculty meetings and retreats, department parties and social functions; cultural performances and exhibits.Facilities: Plans and implements office assignments, renovations and repairs; classroom assignments and scheduling. Administers visiting fellows apartment program, including management of five apartments, in coordination with the Provost and Housing Offices
  • Communications: Supports the Executive Director’s plans for Center communications, including drafting newsletter, updating the website and events calendar. Supervises IT support person, shared with other units.

 

Staff supervision

  • Supervises the administrative staff of the Seeger Center.
  • Manages all HR responsibilities such as position changes, recruitment, on-boarding and payroll operations, prepares and maintains position descriptions.
  • Responsible for annual performance reviews and merit increase program and processes.
  • Resolves conflicts, institutes best practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 4-6 years relevant experience in U.S. nonprofit or higher education management.
  • 4-6 years of experience in budget management and oversight of financial operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a project team, multi-task and delegate efficiently.
  • Experience in building and fostering an inclusive, harmonious work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; Demonstrated commitment to DEI priorities.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, Microsoft suite (or comparable HR and financial management systems); database software; ability and enthusiasm to learn additional systems as needed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent judgement and inter-cultural skills and sensitivity
  • Detail-oriented with a proactive approach.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends occasionally, and some Labor and Memorial Day holidays.
