Departmental Overview

The mission of The Lawrence Hall of Science is to inspire and engage through science discovery and learning in ways that advance equity and opportunity. We support high quality education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) everywhere— in schools, science centers, afterschool programs, homes, and universities. Our model learning programs are adopted around the world; our instructional materials are disseminated nationally; and we advance the field of science education through our exhibits, digital tools, professional learning expertise, and research.

Responsibilities
  • Plans, schedules, and implements annual fundraising projects and programs, including the Annual Fund, online giving opportunities such as The BIG GIVE and crowdfunding campaigns, as well as an annual calendar of donor cultivation and solicitation events. Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met. Supports the Director and Deputy Director in stewardship of major gifts and ongoing donor relations. Coordinates activities closely with Lawrence Hall of Science Membership and Marketing Departments to maximize engagement across various constituent groups, identify and engage potential donors, and increase the base of support for Lawrence Hall of Science.
  • Writes and creates effective promotional and solicitation materials, including annual solicitation letters, digital materials, invitations, brochures, and related materials and oversees their production, working with digital and graphic designers and program leaders to ensure content positively represents The Lawrence Hall of Science strategic priorities, mission and brand. Becomes a knowledgeable and persuasive advocate for these priorities and has direct interaction with donors and prospect to represent these priorities. Actively seeks to identify new prospects, and strategic opportunities for donor cultivation.
  • Provides staff support to The Lawrence Hall of Science Advisory Council, supports Director in communication with Council members, and handles special projects/assignments involving direct interaction with volunteers and donors.
  • Develops fundraising strategies within Berkeley campus policy guidelines.Participates in short and long-range planning activities, providing analysis and information on results of fundraising activities, and makes recommendations to Resource Development management for new strategies, approaches or materials as required. Works with Resource Development management to focus on top institutional priorities for philanthropic partnership.
  • Coordinates stewardship of donor records to ensure department needs are met and operations are consistent with University policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications
  • Thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with volunteers, campus colleagues, members, and donors.
  • Strong organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, discretion, and excellent judgement in handling sensitive information.
  • Thorough ability to identify, plan, articulate, and execute a wide range of personalized approaches to individual donor cultivation and solicitation.
  • Demonstrated communication skills including public speaking, writing and presenting, and use of social media.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough working knowledge of or the ability to quickly develop an understanding of The Lawrence Hall of Science—and/or an institution of a comparable profile— including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc. governing nonprofit fundraising.
  • Highly developed attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary range of the position is $77,500.00 - $90,000.00, commensurate with experience.
