The Office of Career Strategy is dedicated to helping students understand their professional goals and interests, learn about the exciting world of possibilities, chart their career paths and achieve their goals – during law school and throughout their professional lifetime.

Reporting to the Director for Private Sector Recruiting, the Assistant Director for Cross-Disciplinary Careers and Alumni Counseling provides career support to all students, with a specialization focused on cross disciplinary careers and dynamic career paths, as well as alumni counseling. The Assistant Director is skilled and knowledgeable about the broad range of careers paths available to our graduates, as well as the diverse professional experiences and interests of our students, the cross disciplinary education offered by our university, and the changing demands of the legal profession.

The Assistant Director’s provides general and specialized counseling to students and alumni, and develops programs, counseling strategies, and other services to meet the career strategy needs of students seeking joint degrees or otherwise interested in incorporating cross disciplinary experiences into their career goals. The Assistant Director also assists with the tracking and reporting of employment outcomes for all students.

Responsibilities include:

Develop and deliver programs and services to support cross-disciplinary career goals of students and alumni

Provide career support to students interested in cross-disciplinary careers, including those who are enrolled in joint degree and cross-disciplinary certificate programs, those pursuing other cross disciplinary opportunities along with their law degree, and students pursuing graduate law degrees who are focused on careers outside the law. Identify students who are seeking cross disciplinary opportunities, understand their career interests and provide coaching and counseling to reach their goals. Maintain flexibility in programming and services to address the changing needs of each class, as student interests tend to vary significantly from year to year.

Develop and maintain expertise in cross disciplinary careers

Develop and maintain expertise in the broad range of private and public sector careers paths available to law graduates with a cross disciplinary legal education, including joint degrees and certificates, as well as other popular cross-disciplinary courses and experiential opportunities. Engage in ongoing professional development and industry networking to ensure cutting edge knowledge and expertise.

Build and maintain relationships to facilitate cross disciplinary career services

Conduct proactive outreach to employers, with a focus on identifying career paths and employment opportunities that align with law school joint degrees and other cross disciplinary educational experiences, both within and beyond the legal industry.

Target industries with particular relation to Penn Law’s joint degree and cross-disciplinary programs, including financial, health, social services, and technology organizations. Encourage and facilitate employer recruiting, with a strategic perspective on aligning employment opportunities with student and alumni interests. Develop and maintain expertise in the interview and hiring practices of these employers in order to inform counseling efforts.

Build and maintain relationships to facilitate support of cross disciplinary career development, including relationships within OCS, the Law School, the University, the legal industry and with other career sectors most aligned with legal cross disciplinary education. Liaise with faculty and staff members engaged in support of joint degree students to learn more about relevant industries and ensure optimal student service.

Provide career counseling to students

Provide highly individualized counseling and associated job search support to all students on an as-needed basis, including coaching students on job search strategies, conducting mock interviews, and reviewing resumes and cover letters. Serve as primary point of contact for students interested in cross disciplinary degrees and/or cross disciplinary careers and provide basic education in this counseling to all team members for use in their own counseling.

Manage alumni career counseling

Develop and manage counseling and service model for alumni career advising. Serve as the first point of contact for alumni career advising. Provide direct counseling and coaching and make referrals to other counselors and/or resources as appropriate. Advise alumni regarding potential career changes, job search strategies and salary negotiations; conduct mock interviews; and review resumes and cover letters.

Administer post-graduate internship program

Support eligible JD graduates throughout the life cycle of the post-graduate internship program, including enrollment in the program, ongoing support to identify sponsor organizations, counseling for ongoing job searches, and monitoring ongoing time and performance records.

Support graduate employment tracking

Assist in the monitoring of graduate employment outcomes. Provide support, as needed, for tracking and reporting graduate employment outcomes.

Other duties as assigned

Candidate Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. required; J.D. strongly preferred.
  • five to seven years of progressively increasing responsibility in academic administration or a law firm or business environment.
  • experience with JD cross disciplinary careers, e.g., through having worked in a JD cross disciplinary career, or career counseling regarding the same.
  • Strong organization and recordkeeping skills are preferred.
  • A history of working successfully with diverse constituencies, including employers, faculty, alumni, current students, prospective students, and colleagues.
  • We seek candidates with established track records as collaborators in the workplace; commitment to the Penn Law ideal of collaboration is required.
