Nature of Work

An NIH R01-funded post-doctoral position is available in the department of Physiology and Biophysics in the Peng lab at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado.

The vestibular system is responsible for our sense of balance, and as we age, we are more likely to experience vertigo and falls. Little is known about mechanisms underlying vestibular dysfunction during the aging process. The sensory hair cells of the vestibular system are responsible for encoding head movements, and the mechanotransduction process converts the head movement into electrical signals for processing in the brain. We will be performing the first experiments to study how the peripheral vestibular system changes with age in rodents > 3 years old. This position focuses on the mechanotransduction and hair cell signal processing properties and will be based primarily in Dr. Anthony Peng’s lab, a world leader in hair cell mechanotransduction, as part of a collaborative effort with Dr. Katie Rennie’s lab, a world leader in vestibular hair cell afferent properties.

Supervision Received

The Postdocoral Fellow will be primarily supervised by Dr. Anthony Peng with guidance also from Dr. Katie Rennie.
