General Summary

The Department of Mathematics at Illinois State University is seeking applications for a nine-month, open-rank, tenure-track position beginning August 16, 2022. We seek one faculty member to work on middle grades (5 through 8) teacher preparation.

The position requires an earned doctorate in Mathematics Education or closely related area by August 16, 2022. Other requirements include the ability to teach a wide range of courses focused on mathematics and mathematics education; a strong commitment to teacher education and to quality teaching; and an active research program in Mathematics Education compatible with research interests of current faculty. Teaching or research experience at the middle-school level is preferred. Candidates must be able to demonstrate oral proficiency in the English language as a requirement for this position, as mandated by state law.

The successful candidate at the senior level will have an influential research program in Mathematics Education, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and a sustained history of mentoring graduate students. At the junior level, evidence of excellence in teaching and a promising research program in Mathematics Education are required, and some experience mentoring graduate students is desired. The successful candidate at either level will be expected to maintain an active research program, to assume leadership roles, and to work collaboratively to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics in K-12 educational programs. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Additional Information

Department and Programs. The new appointee will join an energetic and collegial group of mathematics educators in a Mathematics Department housed in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department has more than 27 tenure-line positions, including 10 in Mathematics Education. It offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Mathematics as well as a Ph.D. program in Mathematics Education. The Department provides all content and methods courses in Mathematics Education for majors in elementary, middle school, and secondary education. The Master’s program offers a concentration in Secondary Mathematics Education and a sequence in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education. The Ph.D. program offers specializations at both the K–9 and K–12 levels. The Department has approximately 300 undergraduate majors (about 50% choosing the Secondary Teacher Certification sequence) and approximately 50 graduate students, including 19 in the doctoral program. Required Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate in Mathematics Education or a closely related area by August 16, 2022.
