Job Description The Department of Architecture Urban Planning + Design at the University of Missouri Kansas City invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track, benefit eligible Assistant Professor of Urban Planning + Design. The faculty of Urban Planning and Design are committed to equity planning and social justice as the foundation for scholarship, pedagogy, and practice. We seek a colleague who is enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring students from diverse communities.

We seek a colleague with research interests in climate resilience and adaptation, urban design, and/or digital urbanism with a promising research agenda. Candidates with experience working with diverse communities, including but not limited to African American neighborhoods, resettled communities, or Latinx urbanism are encouraged to apply.

The Urban Planning and Design Program is an undergraduate, PAB-accredited program with an emphasis in preparation for professional practice in planning and related fields. Our undergraduate planning and urban design studios provide space for innovation in applied urban planning practice and research. Studios provide the opportunity to work directly with local communities and the planning profession in the greater Kansas City region. Typical teaching load for tenure-track faculty is one studio and three other courses over two semesters in an academic year. As a small program, we are searching for an individual with an ability to teach urban planning and design studio, courses in the core curriculum, and planning specialty courses related to the candidate’s research.

The Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design is home to the UMKC Center for Neighborhoods (CFN), a research and outreach unit that builds the capacity of neighborhood leaders and advocates. Candidates for this position have the unique opportunity to conduct research that serves the CFN mission, including areas related to food justice, urban neighborhood stabilization, or participatory design for climate change adaptation.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful candidates should have a PhD in urban planning or a related field. ABDs will be considered. Professional experience in urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, or community development, is a plus, but not required.

Full-time, benefit eligible, 9-month tenure-track faculty position

Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and credentials

Comments The Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design will move into the new UMKC School of Science and Engineering in 2022. The new School includes a state-of-the-art, $40 million facility supporting multidisciplinary education, research, and economic development initiatives. Key components include an augmented and virtual reality lab (a $3 million project), an innovation studio and 3D printing lab, as well as a high-performance computing lab. Partnerships will be encouraged across disciplines within this new unit.
