Overview

The University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a visionary scientist to serve as the Director of the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine. The Center and its members seek to unify and focus research, education, and clinical care to accelerate the development and application of personally tailored health care strategies. In its initial stage of development, the Center has emerged as a crucial initiative for the campus and our affiliated health system. The Center houses the region’s largest Biobank Research Program, which links to a multi-institutional enterprise health data warehouse. The Director must be an outstanding scientist committed to both research success and clinical application, who will leverage the Center’s resources and lead it in new directions in personalized medicine. The Director is expected to develop and lead a thriving research community that is poised to fulfill the promise of personalized medicine.

Key resources and linkages

The Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine houses the Biobank Research Program, which has enrolled about 200,000 participants and has collected more than 85,000 samples. The Biobank Laboratory is CLIA/CAP-certified, which makes it one of the first in the country that is able to return preemptive clinical genetic test results to research participants. It also provides pharmacogenomic results to clinicians and staff. The Center is also associated with a multi-institutional enterprise health data warehouse, integrating electronic health record data for 2.4 million active patients from 12 member hospitals, more than 1,000 clinics, more than 4 million ambulatory visits, and state public health databases for research. Center-affiliated faculty utilize the biobank and data warehouse data for federally supported research programs focusing on multi-omic approaches to disease and outcome predictions, computational phenotyping, and natural language processing.

The Center is based on the Anschutz Medical Campus, which includes the University of Colorado health professional schools, more than 60 centers and institutes, and two nationally ranked independent hospitals - UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (with linkages to the entire UCHealth system) and Children’s Hospital of Colorado - that treat more than two million adult and pediatric patients each year. Relevant centers and institutes are the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, the recently established Center for Health AI, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology. The campus receives ~$600M in annual research grant support. In addition to its on-campus partners, the Center is affiliated with additional sites of clinical practice including Denver Health Medical Center, the Rocky Mountain Regional Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and National Jewish Health.

Reporting

The Director of the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine reports to the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and is responsible for interdisciplinary research activities and scholarship, advancement of personalized medicine across the campus, and fiscal management of the Center. The Director will be appointed to an appropriate rank faculty position in a relevant department within the School of Medicine. The Director is expected to collaborate with other divisions, departments, centers, and schools to assure their own as well as others’ success.

Supervision Exercised

The Director will supervise other employees, including those involved in the daily management, supervision, training, and evaluation of scientific directors and other personnel within the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine. The Center Director will also supervise graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and professional research assistants of his/her own research group.
