Shaw Professor

Syracuse University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) invites applications for candidates for the Kenneth A. and Mary Ann Shaw Professor of Practice in Entrepreneurial Leadership (“Shaw Professor”). This is a full time (academic year and summer) non-tenure track endowed faculty position.

The Shaw Professor will have overarching responsibility for magnifying the college’s innovation mission – a key component of the College’s Transforming Our Future plan http://eng-cs.syr.edu/transformation/. In particular, the Shaw Professor will catalyze a campus-wide community for design and prototyping through curricular and extra-curricular programs and by collaborating with the substantial entrepreneurship eco-system at Syracuse University and across Central New York.

A primary role of the Shaw Professor is to lead all aspects of Invent@SU, the university invention accelerators. This six-week summer program accelerates the process of device inventions by immersing undergraduates, from any discipline, in an iterative process of “design, prototype, pitch.” (website and video at invent.syr.edu). The Shaw Professor’s leadership will include working with faculty, machine shop and makerspace staff, IP attorneys, and acting coaches to deliver the programs; working with advancement and corporate relations to engage alumni in evaluating pitches; and collaborating with the Blackstone Launchpad, the Falcone Entrepreneurship Center, and the Technology Commercialization Center to enable student inventors to write business plans and attract investors.

The Shaw Professor will teach in the MAE department and is expected to advance the department by providing excellent instruction at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. A strong commitment to teaching excellence is essential, and preference will be given to candidates who can cover fundamental courses in the fields of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
