The Human Rights Institute (HRI) at the University of Connecticut seeks a Program Assistant to support its educational, research, and outreach initiatives. The incumbent will report to the Associate Director of Operations and will be responsible for the coordination of day-to-day administration of HRI, including coordination of HRI academic programming and events, support of research initiatives, and implementing the communications strategy for HRI and Dodd Impact.

The Human Rights Institute (HRI) at the University of Connecticut is one of the nation’s leading academic centers in human rights research, teaching, and outreach. Faculty combine theoretical and practical expertise on contemporary human rights issues to produce innovative scholarship and prepare students to engage across a spectrum of professions on the most pressing rights issues of our time. HRI is globally recognized for its educational programming, faculty expertise and research, and public engagement and outreach programs. HRI offers an undergraduate major/minor in human rights as well as a graduate certificate and master’s program in human rights (the latter launching in Fall 2021). The undergraduate program is among the largest in the country and UConn was the first public university offering a major. Home to Dodd Human Rights Impact, HRI also works in partnership with communities, policymakers, advocates, businesses, and others to advance a broader culture of human rights in Connecticut and around the world. In addition to awarding the Thomas J. Dodd Prize in International Justice and Human Rights, Dodd Impact programs include human rights education, business and human rights, democracy and dialogues, and human rights film and digital media.

The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in the planning of and providing logistical support for lunchtime seminars, workshops, conferences, research group activities, and other related events and programming.
  • Manage the logistics of the HRI funding competitions, including Undergraduate Scholarships, Graduate Research and Fellowships, Faculty Research and Fellowships and Internship Fellowship placements.
  • Implement the public relations plan for publicity and publications for HRI and Dodd Impact. This includes: updating the content of the website. Lead regular meetings with various Human Rights Institute units to discuss updates to websites and event calendars; ensure effective use of social media, draft content for social media & facilitate the development of social media and communications strategy, updating content regularly.
  • Coordinate content for e-newsletters. Maintain and update mailing lists and other necessary records. Maintain files of promotional activities for each event, and assist in evaluating the success of promotional and marketing campaigns.
  • Write copy for press releases, remarks, feature articles (in narrative style), informational listings, and other publicity materials; proofread written copy, checking for facts, analysis, grammar, and readability. Assist in drafting annual reports and other reports as needed.
  • Provide support to HRI Director, Dodd Impact Director, and Associate Director for Operations as needed.
  • Serve as a resource to students, staff, faculty, and others on matters relating to program policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Supervise temporary administrative staff and oversees the work of graduate assistants responsible for programming, social media, and event planning.
  • Perform related duties as required.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • At least 2 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently provide significant program support.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively with department/university staff, the University community, and external agencies/groups.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with website maintenance and use of Content Management Systems (such as Word Press).
  • Excellent computer skills, including mastery of MS Office

  • Master’s degree.
  • Genuine interest in human rights and higher education.
  • Experience with design programs such as Adobe Professional Suite.
  • Experience with web-based programs such as AirTable and Mailchimp.
  • Experience with writing in a narrative style, designing graphics, and/or managing an organization's social media presence.

    This is a permanent full-time, 35 hours a week position. The university offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Salary will be commensurate with background and experience.
