Management and Organization Faculty Position Description

The Department of Management at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship, beginning September 1, 2022. Appropriate candidates will hold an earned PhD/DBA in Management or closely-related discipline (ABDs will be considered but must complete their PhD by 8.1.2022). Candidates will be expected to teach in-person and online core and elective courses at graduate and undergraduate levels.

Candidates from a variety of backgrounds are welcome to apply, but should possess research and teaching interests at the intersection of business and society. Topical areas of interest might include, for example, ethics, human resources/labor, entrepreneurship, and other related areas of management and organization. The position will support the PhD track in Organizations and Social Change, which provides a distinctive critical approach to management and organization studies.

The Department is part of the AACSB-accredited College of Management, which offers bachelor and graduate degrees, including an MBA that can be completed online, on campus, or a combination. The college has a Center for Collaborative Leadership, an Entrepreneurship Center, and it collaborates in cross-college initiatives such as the Sustainable Solutions Lab and the Venture Development Center. Numerous opportunities for research and collaboration exist with faculty, businesses, governmental agencies, institutes, and research centers in the university system and in the greater Boston area. The region is a global hub of innovation and expertise in a number of sectors, including financial services, clean tech, healthcare, life sciences, education, and software development.

The University of Massachusetts Boston has outstanding research programs in a number of fields and has been designated as an institution of "high research activity" by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Located on Boston Harbor in one of the most intellectually rich and innovative cities in the United States, UMass Boston is recognized nationally as a model of excellence for urban universities. Its nine colleges and schools enroll about 16,000 students and employ more than 800 full-time and part-time faculty, who provide over 200 academic programs leading to baccalaureate, certificates, master's and doctoral degrees.

Application instructions:

Please apply online with a current curriculum vitae, cover letter or statement of interest, sample publications, evidence of teaching ability (if available), and contact information for three letters of recommendation

Applications will be accepted continuously until the position is filled, but the review of applications will begin on November 1st, 2021.

Working at University of Massachusetts Boston

The University of Massachusetts Boston is nationally recognized as a model of excellence for urban public universities. The scenic waterfront campus is located next to the John F. Kennedy Library, with easy access to downtown Boston.

The second-largest campus in the UMass system, UMass Boston combines a small-college experience with the vast resources of a major research university. With a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students easily interact with professors because most teaching occurs in small class sizes. Ninety-three percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their fields.

UMass Boston’s academic excellence is reflected by a growing student body of nearly 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university’s eight colleges offer more than 100 undergraduate programs and 50 graduate programs. The University Honors Program serves 300 students who thrive on intellectual challenge. Enriched courses probe more deeply into theory or venture further into application.

UMass Boston’s diverse student body provides a global context for student learning, and its location in a major U.S. city provides connections to employers in industries such as finance, health care, technology, service, and education, offering students opportunities to gain valuable in-school experience via internships, clinicals, and other career-related placements.

More than 100 student organizations — including clubs, literary magazines, newspaperradio stationart gallery, and 16 NCAA Division III sports teams — offer a rich campus life. Students live throughout Greater Boston and in apartment communities just steps from the campus, and enjoy the rich amenities, cultural attractions, and educational opportunities that make the city the biggest and best college town in the nation.
