Dean of Student Development

 

Germanna Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. As a comprehensive community college, Germanna provides quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities for the residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, Culpeper, King George, Madison, Orange, Spotsylvania and Stafford.

 

Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Germanna Community College is enthusiastically seeking an innovative, student-centered, and equity-minded Dean of Student Development. Reporting to the Vice President of Student Services and Equity Advancement, the Dean of Student Development is responsible for planning and implementing services, programs, and activities that enhance the student experience and support student achievement of academic and career goals with an emphasis on equitable outcomes for ALL students.

 

This position is responsible for providing leadership for strategic planning, assessment, and budget oversight for all Student Development units. The Dean also serves as Program Owner for the EAB Navigate Student Success Management System.

 

This position is responsible for the leadership and supervision of; Academic Advising, Counseling Services, High School Career Coaches, Independent Dual Enrollment, New Student Orientation, Student Development (SDV) courses, Early Alert, Care Team, Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), Student Activities, Disability Services, Great Expectations, and Career and Transfer Services.

 

The Dean of Student Development is responsible for coordinating and administering student conduct policies and procedures. The Dean of Student Development serves as the chair for the Threat Assessment Team and manages the supporting software. The Dean of Student Development serves as an advisor to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. The Dean of Student Development participates on and leads college-wide committees and projects related to student success.

 

This position will be required to travel to all college locations and throughout our service community area. Additionally, this position will be required to attend meetings across the state and elsewhere as needed.

 

According to federal law, specifically The Student Right to Know and Campus Security Act of 1990 (re-named the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act in 1998), this position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) required to report certain crimes by the federally mandated Clery Act.

 

The Commonwealth of Virginia requires all Executive Branch employees, including new hires, rehires or transfers to disclose their vaccination status upon hire. Disclosure of vaccination status (and for those fully vaccinated, proof of vaccination) will be required on your first day of work. If you are not vaccinated for any reason or choose not to disclose your vaccination status, you will be required to be tested for COVID-19 once per week on an indefinite basis. Special Assignments  

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

 

KSA's/Required Qualifications                  

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience in a higher education setting or equivalent with significant responsibility in support services
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use data to monitor and assess Student Development programming
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Strong computer and technical skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends
  • Knowledge of Student Development Theory

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field
  • Experience in community college setting
  • Experience with Student Information Systems
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional laws, regulations, policies, and procedures including SACSCOC, Title IX, ADA, FERPA, Threat Assessment, and Student Conduct
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
