Overall Responsibilities: The Student Health Center adjunct (PT) nurse practitioner will provide acute and chronic illness and injury management, as well as education, services, and the evaluation of wellness; health promotion, disease prevention information.

Essential Duties: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this position.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assess, diagnose, evaluate, treat, and manage acute and chronic illness, disease and injury, independently and/or in consultation with or referring to another health care provider.
  2. Obtain medical histories and conduct physical examinations.
  3. Track patient progress and provide follow-up services.
  4. Oversees standing order for plan b and lab draws.
  5. Order, perform and interpret diagnostic studies.
  6. Dispense and prescribe medications and administer vaccines as appropriate under regulations of the DEA.
  7. Prescribe physical therapy and other rehabilitative treatments. Provide family planning education and services.
  8. Provide health screening and immunizations.
  9. Provide primary care services, health maintenance care and annual physicals
  10. Perform minor surgeries and procedures such as biopsies, suturing, lesion removals, splinting and immobilizing.
  11. Counseling and educating patients on health behaviors, self-care skills, and treatment options.
  12. Give clinical instructions to nursing staff, medical assistants and others as required.
  13. Assist in the clinical instruction and supervision of medical, nurse practitioner, nursing and physician assistant students.
  14. Consult with other District employees, private health care providers, community agencies, or organizations to assist in solving student health problems.
  15. Keep current on relevant medical research, technology, and related issues by attending continuing education courses/conferences, professional meetings, reading professional journals and maintaining membership in professional organizations.
  16. Provide emergency response for the District including but not limited to, administering first aid, crisis intervention, assistance with emergency transportation, and appropriate referrals.
  17. Research health topics for students and staff; assists in creating health care literature.
  18. Promote and participate in District health care activities and events to raise awareness of services.
  19. Ensure adherence to safety, cleanliness and preparedness standards.
  20. Understand and comply with Universal Precautions, M/SDS and HAZCOM policies and procedures as part of COC comprehensive OSHA compliance program.
  21. Understand and comply with COC Safety manual paying special attention to Responsibilities Section Chapter on Blood Borne Pathogens, and Chapter on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  22. Understand and comply with the policies and procedures of Student Health.Selects inventory of medical supplies and equipment.

Desirable knowledge, skills, experience, and abilities: Knowledge of: Current nursing and community health principles, College health nursing principles, Communicable disease prevention and control, and Computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Physical Characteristics: Must be able to perform full range of motion activities such as, but not limited to, walking, standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), or climbing while performing duties. Must be able to use touch, sight, and hearing in performing physical assessments. Must be able to communicate effectively in English.

Qualifications

Possession of an unexpired California Community College Instructor Credential in Nursing.

OR - a master’s degree in Nursing AND experience working as a family or adult health nurse practitioner

AND the following Licenses/Certifications (All licenses/certifications must be maintained throughout course of employment):

  • Current, valid licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with the California State Board of Registered Nursing;
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the California State Board of Registered Nursing;
  • Valid certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the State of California;
  • National Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) from an accredited agency
  • Eligibility for certification in Public Health Nursing issued by the California State Board of Registered Nursing;
  • Possession of a Nurse Practitioner Furnishing number issued by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN);
  • Valid Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) with AED;
  • An individual Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license issued by the United States DEA for Schedule II-V controlled substances; and
  • Valid California driver’s license.

AND the ability to:

  • Provide both basic and primary health care to individuals in an independent and professional manner.
  • Provide appropriate emergency response and crisis intervention.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary team to deliver health related services.
  • Communicate effectively individually and in groups with a diverse population in meeting health related needs and about a variety of health related topics.
  • Make appropriate referrals and facilitate access to both private providers and community health resources.
  • Apply principles of infection control.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and community.

  • Professional experience includes both work/occupational experience and teaching experience. Teaching and occupational experience may be combined to total the required number of full-time years of experience.

Conditions of Employment

Assignments may include Monday through Friday (day and evening), as well as Saturday classes.

Adjunct Salary Rate: Starting at $67.25 per hour. (Link to Academic Adjunct Salary Schedule).

Selection and Applicant Pool Process

Positions are open until filled. The above position represents the anticipated need for the upcoming semester(s) or the applicant pool. The department may review materials at any time based on enrollment needs and the Human Resources Office will contact selected applicants for the interview process. Only completed application packets that meet the minimum qualifications or established equivalency will be considered.

Qualified applicants who successfully complete the selection and interview process will be placed in the applicant pool and may be eligible for adjunct employment with the District anytime within the next 36 months.
