Legal Writing Lecturer - School of Law

Legal Writing Lecturer - School of Law

Berkeley Law is seeking to hire one or more Lecturers to teach for the Legal Research, Analysis and Writing Program.

Legal Writing Lecturers typically teach two sections of first-year law students (1L) each semester. Lecturers teach Legal Research and Writing in the fall, introducing students to basic lawyering skills including how to read, analyze, and synthesize cases, and how to use cases to predict the likely outcome of disputes. Lecturers also teach students basic research and citation skills. Finally, our lecturers teach students how to draft predictive memos, analyzing both state and federal law issues of increasing complexity. Lecturers review and provide written feedback regarding students' work and meet individually with students to review their progress. This course is three units and pass/fail.

In the spring, our lecturers teach the same students in Written and Oral Advocacy, which builds on the research, analysis, and writing skills introduced during the fall semester. Lecturers additionally teach students how to frame persuasive arguments in a trial court brief, and how to present an oral argument. As in the fall, lecturers review and provide written feedback regarding students' work. Lecturers also attend their students' oral arguments during mid-April. This course is two units and graded.

General duties include developing a syllabus, preparing course materials, holding office hours, and assigning grades.

Additional materials may be required of applicants.

Berkeley Law seeks candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through teaching. Qualified women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.
