Tester/CounselorDescription/Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Adult Basic Education and Literacy Services, the Tester / Counselor is responsible for the daily operation of the Workforce Development and Continuing Education Testing Center.

Responsibilities/Duties

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assists with ABE/GED® and Community ESL testing and registration.
  • Monitors and distributes resource materials to adjunct faculty and staff.
  • Assists with telephone inquiries regarding ABE/GED® programs and student enrollment.
  • Conducts quality checks for student registration and enrollment forms.
  • Submits student registration forms to the registration staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Scope of Responsibility:

  • The Tester/Counselor knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures as it relates to student testing and counseling for the division and the college at large. The Tester/Counselor is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.

Decision Making:

  • On a regular basis, the Tester/Counselor exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people and quality of services within the functional area.

Communication:

  • The Tester/Counselor exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate. Good oral and written communication skills are required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting in normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arms in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.
  • Ability to move about.


Required Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or general equivalency diploma.

Experience:

  • 1-3 years of professional work experience.
  • Experience in a higher education setting and knowledge of State policies and practices preferred.
  • Knowledge of CASAS and TABE assessments preferred
  • Knowledge of all LACES data elements
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a focus on customer service.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural community college environment a plus.
