Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Digital Communications Associate supports Penn Engineering’s goal of increasing brand awareness and engagement through digital platforms, including social media, websites and electronic newsletters. The Office of Communications is a fast-paced environment and the Digital Communications Associate will pitch and produce content under tight deadlines to ensure satisfactory and timely promotion of news and events.

Job Description

The Digital Communications Associate in the Office of Communications in Penn Engineering will Independently oversee the day-to-day management of existing social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), including content discovery and adaptation for the different platforms. Throughout social media accounts, ensure that content is consistent with branding standards and style guide. Create and grow new social media campaigns and establish new channels as needed. Collaborate with external Penn Social Media Group to develop strategic social campaigns around both new and pre-existing content.

Independently produce new content for digital platforms (websites, social media channels, electronic newsletters), including announcements of honors and awards, student-focused stories, multimedia features and School-level events. Work collaboratively with editorial staff on assigned stories as needed.

Be proficient with Penn Engineering’s custom WordPress theme and be able to support stakeholders in the School as they manage their website content. This includes troubleshooting users who are experiencing difficulties, assisting in the creation of new pages, managing navigation menus and answering questions related to style and branding. Also interface with School-level IT professionals and/or external developers to address any technological issues.

Oversee the creation and distribution of the bi-weekly “This Week at Penn Engineering” electronic newsletter to an audience of 18,000+ recipients via MailChimp. Pitch stories to be included to the Director of Communications and editorial staff, then build and distribute to appropriate lists. Also create and distribute routine special events announcements, manage associated listservs and add/delete recipients as needed.

Provide digital media support to stakeholders in the School for internal image and video assets, including responding to image requests and light photo editing via Adobe Photoshop.

Work collaboratively to support Penn Engineering Communications editorial staff in maintaining branding throughout the School's communications efforts, including editing and approving the School's departmental electronic newsletters and other communications-adjacent materials.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field and 2 to 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Office of Communications is a fast-paced environment and the Digital Communications Associate must be able to pitch and produce content under tight deadlines to ensure satisfactory and timely promotion of news and events. Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Must be comfortable understanding, creating and working with existing STEM-related content and be able to adjust to and emulate the voice, style and branding of existing Penn Engineering content across all platforms (web, social media, etc.).

Applicants should have a strong understanding of WordPress as a website CMS and demonstrate a track record of website administration, including themes, creating pages, managing plugins and website best practices. Knowledge of HTML is preferred.

Applicants in this space must be strong writers with a firm grasp on how to produce successful social media campaigns, with a particular focus on Instagram and Twitter.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate proficiency with WordPress, Microsoft Office, Google Docs and Adobe Photoshop, and have extensive experience managing social media accounts and campaigns. Working knowledge of Sprout Social or a similar social media planning tool, Canva, Mailchimp, Adobe Illustrator, and news aggregators are all a plus.
