Position Summary:

Today, educators need knowledge, skills and dispositions that help them put evidence to work as they navigate critical challenges amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Improvement and Community Engagement Associate in the School of Education will work closely with School and civic leaders to leverage high quality research and tools from improvement science to meet these challenges. The Improvement and Community Engagement Associate is responsible for identifying grant funding to build the knowledge, skills and dispositions of community partners to improve educational outcomes at scale; co-leading the grant application process with the Frank A. Daniels Professor of Public Policy and Education in the School of Education; building connections with outside partners (e.g., local/state officials, civic organizations) and conducting outreach efforts to seed improvement projects; convening and overseeing the work with partner organizations (e.g., school districts); coordinating build-measure-learn cycles that provide data to teams to use to adapt their improvement strategy; and developing instructional modules that promote the learning of improvement science approaches.

Educational Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues. Doctoral degree from an accredited program in education, public policy or related field preferred

Qualifications and Experience:

- Three or more years of relevant experience required. This experience may be related to the programs that focus research and practice-based evidence towards state, regional, or community/school district improvement.
- Demonstrated knowledge of tools and approaches from improvement science.
- At least two years of management/supervisory experience.
- Experience collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data.
- Experience writing grant applications.
- Ability to direct multiple tasks and complicated work in an organized fashion in the face of changing priorities.
- Ability to reschedule and distribute work assignments based on shifting priorities.
- Ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment.
- Experience interacting with diverse coworkers and community partners in ways that build trust and mutual respect.
- Evidence of skills that communicate information, in both written and oral forms, to multiple audiences including community members, policymakers, school principals, and academics.
- Experience authoring articles on education and/or improvement science for both peer-refereed and practitioner journals.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Carolina Computing Initiative: Beginning with the freshman class of 2000, undergraduates must purchase laptop computers. The University has arranged for IBM to offer computers at excellent prices.
