About the Department:

As its mission, the Department of Clinical Sciences (DOCS) strives to prepare today’s veterinary, undergraduate, and graduate students to respond to current and future challenges in both human and veterinary medicine. We serve national and global endeavors focused on companion animal, aquatic and wildlife medicine, as well as human medicine through excellence in teaching, high impact research and discovery, provision of clinical and diagnostic services, in conjunction with extension and engagement on national and international levels. In an effort to benefit both animals and human patients, this position will have a primary research orientation in One Health, including focuses on the areas of pathology, immunology, infectious disease, and microbiology.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at NCSU has gained international recognition on the strength of its teaching, research, engagement, and patient care efforts and is ranked 4th among the nation’s colleges of veterinary medicine in the current U.S. News & World Report survey. Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health and Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees, as well as opportunities for specialization in various medical disciplines.

Essential Job Duties:

The successful applicant will participate as a team member in the development and application of new diagnostic tools, novel targeted therapies for intracellular pathogens, exploration of mechanisms of infectious disease, and applied clinical translational research. Current research within the IPRL includes an emphasis on the role of intracellular bacteria such as Bartonella species as a cause or cofactor in the development of chronic diseases, with a primary focus on neurological diseases and cancer oncogenesis.

In addition to conducting independent research projects, the candidate will be expected to participate in ongoing collaborative research programs within the Intracellular Pathogens Research Laboratory (IPRL) at NCSU and involving Duke University, Tulane University, the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), and other major US medical centers.

The College of Veterinary Medicine has robust research programs including genetic analysis of familial disease in companion animals, gastrointestinal biology and disease, stem cell and developmental biology and neurosciences, among others. In conjunction with ongoing IPRL research initiatives, the candidate is expected to participate in graduate student training and potentially mentor undergraduate research student projects.

Although this is a 100% research position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in clinical and anatomic rounds and journal club, as well as numerous daily research seminars at the College and surrounding Research Triangle Park (RTP) institutions.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Requires veterinary doctor’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.

Other Required Qualifications:

Strong communication, presentation, and writing skills are required.

Expertise in anatomic and cytopathology with an emphasis on basic and applied research.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate should have experience in teaching, pathology practice, and research.

PhD is highly preferred.

Required License(s) or Certification(s):

Board certified or board eligibility with American College of Veterinary Pathologists (DACVP) or European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology is required.
