Drew University is seeking a University Locksmith/Electronic Security Technician in the Facilities and Campus Operations Department.

Summary:

The University seeks a journey-level locksmith who is a well-organized, self-motivated, effective communicator and team player with experience working with electronic access systems, interchangeable core systems and organizing and tracking a master key system. The University Locksmith will work as a part of the Facilities team and interacts directly with all areas of the campus, especially Campus Security, Technology and Residence Life.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintains the integrity of all campus doors, locks and associate hardware, including but not limited to, door knobs, deadbolts, crash bars, door closers, electronic and ADA door openers, for all University owned buildings and residence halls by performing preventative maintenance, routine maintenance and respond to service requests.

Operates, updates and maintains the proximity card reader access system on campus, including electronic locks, strikes, door contacts, and door readers. In coordination with the Director of Public Safety and AVP of Facilities, assign and manage all access permissions for the campus community as well as door schedules. Input data into access system and work order system on a daily basis.

Perform key cuttings, core pining and lock changes.

Maintain accurate records of all core codes and key distribution in a way that is accessible to others if needed. Work closely with Student Life and department heads on the distribution and tracking of all keys, including all student residence hall keys.

Requirements:

Be able to communicate through computer email, telephone voice mail systems, two-way radio systems and cell phone; able to use basic functions of a computer, including competency with Microsoft Office, for tracking work orders, managing scheduled meetings and work, managing email, documenting and researching locks, parts, specifications and status updates.

The ability to understand plans, design specifications, and manufacturers’ instructions and recommendations to ascertain the configuration of equipment and components, ensure their proper installation, and remedy issues is required.

Competency using tools and operating equipment of the trade.

Able to drive an automobile, van, light truck or golf cart.

Experience with BEST lock systems preferred, including Keystone 600.

Prior experience with networked proximity card reader access systems.

Able to maintain a clean and organized working environment that is set up for other facilities personnel to be able to find pre-set cores or make keys outside regular business hours in case of an emergency.

Provide instruction and direction to other members of the Facilities team, Campus Security team and Residence Life team involved with changing cores, making keys and managing security, to insure the ability of the departments to respond to all needs and all times. Provide support and engages in cross training with other skilled craft workers. Support other maintenance areas, as assigned, by performing unskilled or semi-skilled duties.

This is a designated emergency personnel position and might be called to respond to campus emergencies, both natural and man-made.

Normal mobility to move around construction sites. Able to bend, stoop, twist, climb up and down ladders. Able to lift and carry 50 pounds, including up and down stairs.

Strong English written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required. Willingness and ability to periodically work overtime hours and respond to emergency calls after hours/weekends.

Education:

Associate’s degree, or vocational or technical school degree for locksmithing required; Bachelor’s degree preferred; significant experience may be substituted for education.

Experience:

3-5 years required; 5-8 years preferred
