JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Kinesiology at the University of Connecticut is seeking a dynamic and team-oriented leader with creative energy to serve as the main office team lead with responsibility to oversee all business operations, including financial, human resources and payroll, and programmatic support for the Department. One full-time permanent office staff member and temporary student employees report to this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates and manages a wide range of fiscal, administrative, and operational matters including fiscal oversight of all departmental and program budgets
  • Prepare budget projections, regular statements, and monitor all departmental budgets, including foundation accounts
  • Serve as the fiscal officer for and manager of all department accounts, including Foundation accounts, and provide regular updates to the department head and faculty
  • Oversee and manage human resource and payroll functions of Department personnel - faculty, staff, student workers, special payroll employees, graduate assistants, and gratis appointments (offer letters, payroll authorizations, timecards)
  • Work with the Sponsored Programs Services and assist in the management of post-award budgets and accounts, including setup of new projects, monitoring current projects and closeout of completed projects
  • Prepare financial and ad hoc reports as appropriate to meet Federal, State, University, and departmental requirements
  • Supervises and evaluates work of main office staff and other administrative personnel and students to assure efficient and coordinated operations
  • Assists in communications/marketing for Department and its programs, including the departmental website and social media
  • Supports Department Head and faculty with activities related to Promotion, Tenure and Reappointment, and departmental searches
  • Represents Department at regular college administrative meetings
  • Occasionally assists Sponsored Programs Services with pre-award documentation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business or a related field and three (3) to four (4) years of professional experience in a responsible administrative support position OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Proven experience in fiscal operations, including one or more of the following: 1) analysis and evaluation of data for budget planning and assessment of current and future financial status, 2) financial reporting and financial management and/or 3) compliance, accounting procedures and budgeting principles.
  3. Demonstrated work experience in academic programs in higher education, or related field
  4. Experience working in a fast-paced, complex, multi-faceted office environment
  5. Experience developing, presenting, and interpreting financial information and reports
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to establish relationships with a variety of constituents, both internal and external to the University
  7. Demonstrated ability to lead others
  8. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  9. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  10. Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and financial records systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business or a related field
  2. Demonstrated experience managing academic fiscal accounts and/or with grants and contracts management
  3. Experience with Kuali Financial Systems, Core-CT, HuskyBuy, and PeopleSoft
  4. Ability to problem solve and regularly exercise sound judgement regarding fiscal and administrative procedures
  5. Experience developing and maintaining organizational structures and systems
  6. Experience working with diverse populations
  7. Ability to expertly manage time and deadlines, and juggle multiple competing priorities
  8. Supervisory experience
APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, twelve-month position with an excellent benefits package.
